Why Bother?

Summary
For a wildly outrageous new series of crime and deception, trust in USA Today bestselling author Cynthia St. Aubin...
During Jane Avery’s shady childhood, truth was always a moving target. Since then, she’s learned that colorful fictions can clean up a lot of life’s messes - and she learned from the best. Her mother, Alexis Avery, is the most imaginatively duplicitous private eye in Denver. When the mother of invention goes missing, Jane knows that only her acquired skills of deceit can solve the mystery.
It’s what aspiring lawyer Jane doesn’t know that’s left her blindsided: for starters, Alexis's latest client - a sleazy and deadly gazillionaire architect whose exploits keep the tabloids in business - and her mother's two-year affair with fellow PI Paul Gladstone. Sure, Alexis has carved out a niche for danger. But this investigation is leading Jane down a rabbit hole of kidnapping, bribery, blackmail, hired assassins, and murder.
Maybe Jane doesn’t know her mother at all. Maybe to find her, Jane has to face the truth. She just hopes she can recognize it when she sees it. It could save both their lives.

FANTASTIC, HILARIOUS and SARCASTIC!!!!
Cynthia St Aubin is an author I would never have considered purchasing one of her books before now. She is known for writing humorous witch mysteries and paranormal psychologist books. Not my thing!
This title caught my attention and once I verified it was without witches, vampires and such, I decided to give it a try.
The protagonist in this book is a witty, smart, sarcastic newly graduated from law school woman. She's a smart aleck with hilarious comments or thoughts throughout (example: There are a few things I know I'm good at: lying, giving blow jobs and memorizing and regurgitating obscure legal terms.).
The publisher's summary gives a good description so I won't elaborate.
This is a really fun and engaging book.

I enjoyed this outrageously humorous mystery!
Private Lies is the first novel in the Jane Avery mystery series. Jane Avery is a recent law school graduate who finished second in her class by 0.3 point only because the young woman who finished first was providing sexual favors for the dean. Jane's mother Alexis is a Denver PI who has a rather unconventional parenting style. Alexis appears only by reference in this novel. Author Cynthia St. Aubin is well known for her paranormal novels, my least favorite fiction genre. The author's style is light and humorous. In this novel she excels at her very creative use of vulgar slang words and terms. Private Lies has an excellent plot and wonderfully vivid characters. I had never listened to a book narrated by Amy Landon who did a great job with Private Lives.

Great story...terrible narration
I enjoyed the fun, fast paced story and the humorous and engaging characters. However, the narrator needs to work on her inflection, as she sounds either surprised or irritated throughout the story.

Jane is callous and not very unlikable
I got this book from Kindle Unlimited. I was listening to it while driving and turned it off after about 2 hours.
In the course of one day, Jane graduates from law school but discovers her Mom is missing. She runs away from the police bro doing the investigation, eats a bunch of maple bacon rolls, and gets choked out by her Mom's BF. She (sort of) kidnaps a millionaire and questions him about her Mom. THEN she gets attacked in her own apartment. The man (Shepherd) who rescued her kills the two bad guys and she responds by making out with him and planning to hide the body. Shepherd then gives a false police report and the CSIs are done within ten minutes. ('Cause two people died. No big deal.)
I love mysteries, especially with strong and intelligent female leads. And I love snarky humor and quirky characters. I don't know why the author felt that stacking personal trauma would help the story along. Graduation and your Mom missing would be enough! Including two attacks on Jane's person in one day is just too much! (And I quit after two hours!)
I don't like Jane. She lies like a rug. Her response to the death of two men in her apartment makes her comes across as callous and very unlikable. It doesn't phase her and she's thinking about sleeping with her hunky rescuer? Gross.
Did not finish.

Narration is horrible
I got up to chapter 3 before giving up. the narrator sounds like a robot. The book seems interesting but I would rather read it than listen to the robot.

Loved it!
An intriguing story and interesting characters and situations. Loved the tongue-in-cheek humor ... it had me laughing so hard as I rode my exercise bicycle! I almost abandoned this book, but now I can't wait to read the next book in the series!

Narrator performance lacked character differential😢
I found more enjoyment in reading this novel. This narrator has a great voice, however, her characterization of the supporting cast was very limited. I enjoyed the novel immensely...when I read it. I cringed at Landon's attempts with male characters...just awful.

Absolutely dreadful narrator!
This is my first book by Cynthia St. Aubin, and it won't be my last. I absolutely loved it. Jane is so feisty and snarky. I would have loved to listen to this without cringing everytime the narrator, Amy Landon, used her Male voice...it was beyond awful, and totally ruined the audiobook. I had to get the ebook top finish it.
