Summary

Thailand 1996. The Year of The Rat. Pete, a young travel writer, wanders into a Bangkok go-go bar and meets the love of his life. Joy is the girl of his dreams, young, stunningly pretty, and one of the Zombie Bar's top-earning pole dancers.

What follows is a roller-coaster ride of sex, drugs, and deception, as Pete discovers that his very own private dancer is not all she claims to be. And that far from being the girl of his dreams, Joy is his own personal nightmare.

A bit different

I like Stephen Leather's books, this was a bit different. It's unusual for the one in love, who can't see beyond his nose, is a man. Well written and kept me guessing to the end. A good listen.

the long haul....

a very long book, the start makes you listen to the very end. a true whodunit in that respect.

I liked the different characters (voices) but felt the book could have been way shorter.

the main character is not likable, he seems naive, I can't understand why he liked to go back for more, especially when the situation he was in was seemingly resolved.

still a good insight into thai bar/expat culture.

Beware weak men at any age traveling to beautiful Thailand ,this book is a must to read Before you go

Exceptional

I was completely absorbed, frustrated, angry and annoyed by a gripping and fascinating story - an enjoyable few hours crossing the globe into another world.

Thailand down to a T

Great story about the seedy world of the Thai bargirl and the sex tourists. A story that is intriguing and very listenable if that's a word!

Thailand’s best book

The best book about Thailand by a mile. Nothing else comes close, it should be compulsory for any first timer going to Thailand to read this, they should really hand a copy out when boarding the plane. If anyone has stayed in Thailand for an extended period they will have met every character in this book. Read it, you won’t be disappointed

Great story with too much repetition

I have to admit I was hooked at the start and then began to believe I had select a duff book. I kept going because I hate giving in on a book. After about a third of the way I was intrigued and annoyed in equal measure. There were times I felt I was listening to a training manual for the sex industry of Thailand.
Points and issues were repeated over and over and I began to be frustrated by the main character.
Then the book just got better and I was desperate to see how it panned out, and the pace hotted up like a thriller. With a number of shocks and twists on route.
Narration was excellent with great characterisation.
So a mixed bag but glad I traveled all the way with it

Amazing book

I read this book about 8 many years ago when I was working in Hong Kong.
it gives a great insight into the culture of Thailand, of which I have visited many times and have friends there.
My copy of the book has done a few rounds around my office where I have handed it to anyone I hear travelling to Thailand.
Well worth a read or listen if you are thinking of travelling to Thailand.
There is one error in the reading in chapter 36 at 13:18. it was joy not Joe.

Loved it, a real eye opener!

Having only visited Thailand once before I have to say I must have had my eyes closed I saw nothing of the content of this book however, after discussing with a friend who travels there twice a year it seems this is a realistic overview of all that unfolds in this well narrated story. ✳️✳️✳️✳️✳️

Not great... bit dull and repetitive actually

Kept thinking something interesting must happen soon, and suddenly it was the end of the book!
The main character is incredibly stupid and very frustrating to hear about. It was an odd book, first one of Stephen Leathers I haven’t liked at all..
Good narration from both narrators though!
