Summary

All leaders are constrained by geography. Their choices are limited by mountains, rivers, seas and concrete. Yes, to follow world events you need to understand people, ideas and movements - but if you don't know geography, you'll never have the full picture.

If you've ever wondered why Putin is so obsessed with Crimea, why the USA was destined to become a global superpower or why China's power base continues to expand ever outwards, the answers are all here. In 10 chapters (covering Russia, China, the USA, Latin America, the Middle East, Africa, India and Pakistan, Europe, Japan and Korea, and the Arctic), using essays and occasionally the personal experiences of the widely travelled author, Prisoners of Geography looks at the past, present and future to offer an essential insight into one of the major factors that determines world history. It's time to put the 'geo' back into geopolitics.

Stop the stupid accents

You don’t need to make up Chinese and Japanese accents to tell a story, it’s 2019

Mixed

Terrible narration. Sooooo slow. Only wanted to give 1 star. Factual explanations very good. Comprehensive from an experienced observer.

Great angle on politics and history.

Great book highlighting an underrated reason why countries and peoples have behaved like they have over time. No excuses though. Took a little while to get used the commentary but I eventually enjoyed it and the writers wit and style. Anvils become sponges! Brilliant!

Great overview of geopolitics!

Some of the things in this book I already knew, but most of the ones I didn't know opened my eyes to why the world we live in is what it is (for better or for worse).
Definitely recommend listening to this.

Thought provoking

I certainly learned a lot..and it clarifies why some of the tensions and conflicts simmering today are not resolved.
Well written and narrated..

Fascinating read

Loved the book, it was a great insite into how the world works. I've always respected Tim Marshall.

the narrator's pronunciation is a little questionable though.

great book well worth a read

I found the that the narration of this book was good and of course so was the content.

this book to me was something different, rather then just endless politics or dates in history or wars fought. the way in which geography is used to help better understand countries and why they are the way they are.

Great book for any history, geography buffs or anyone interested in a broad political view on the world.
