About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Indira Varma, who has starred in Luther and Game of Thrones. This definitive recording includes an introduction by Vivien Jones.

When Elizabeth Bennet first meets eligible bachelor Fitzwilliam Darcy, she thinks him arrogant and conceited; he is indifferent to her good looks and lively mind. When she later discovers that Darcy has involved himself in the troubled relationship between his friend Bingley and her beloved sister Jane, she is determined to dislike him more than ever. In the sparkling comedy of manners that follows, Jane Austen shows the folly of judging by first impressions and superbly evokes the friendships, gossip and snobberies of provincial middle-class life.

Some consider Pride and Prejudice to be the greatest novel in the English canon, I am one of those. I had not thought it possible to enjoy this novel more than I already do, but I was wrong, Indira Varma's narration was practically perfect. A masterpiece, narrated by a master of an actor.

My favourite novel, beautifully narrated

I loved this reading of P&P. For starters, the book is perfection and I always like noticing new details in it. I loved this reading, sometimes I think there is a danger of really histrionic performances of her comic characters. This just let Jane Austen do all the heavy lifting in terms of the comedy. I loved the humanity of this reading.

My favourite book in a beautiful rendition

I have always known the story, read the book - years ago, seen the film. But, finally I have taken the time to listen.....& listen properly. I'm desperately sad to have finished this and desperately sad that Indira Varma hasn't recorded everything that Jane Austen wrote, P&P was perfection and the narration was perfection. Please persuade (deliberate pun) her to do another one, or better still, all of them.

Perfect narration

I have listened to this... my favourite book... read by at least 4 different readers and, forr me, this was way the best. it is read without the over respect for its literary value (which is evident without this) that is present in so many readings. This made it sound current and modern... as it was when it was written!

Brilliant modern interpreted reading.
