A story about the people who stay with us long after they are gone.
We all have a story, but few of us have a witness. For Preston Clarke, that witness was David Bales.
In this moving account of an improbable bond, a writer and an elder navigate the complexities of memory, truth, and the weight of "unfinished business." Through hours of conversation and years of research, a vivid portrait emerges of a man who lived through some of the most defining moments of the twentieth century, only to face his greatest challenges in the quiet hallways of a retirement home.
Inside this book, you will find:
- A Masterclass in Empathy: The evolving relationship between a caregiver/writer and a man facing his final chapter.
- The Search for Truth: A journey into military records and family secrets to find a son lost to time.
- A Tribute to the "Ordinary": A celebration of a life lived with integrity, even when no one was watching.
Preston is a heart-wrenching, ultimately hopeful exploration of what it means to truly see another human being, and what we owe to those who entrust us with their legacy.
