About this listen

'One of the greatest anti-heroes ever written' LEE CHILD

Bernie Gunther returns to his desk on homicide from the horrors of the Eastern Front to find Berlin changed for the worse.

He begins to investigate the death of a railway worker, but is obliged to drop everything when Reinhard Heydrich of the SD orders him to Prague to spend a weekend at his country house. Bernie accepts reluctantly, especially when he learns that his fellow guests are all senior figures in the SS and SD.

The weekend quickly turns sour when a body is found in a room locked from the inside. If Bernie fails to solve this impossible mystery not only is his reputation at stake, but also that of Reinhard Heydrich, a man who cannot bear to lose face.

brilliantly read as always, I can't imagine Bernie in any other voice. these books are so well researched, it almost feels like a Bernie Gunter Biography.

brilliant book yet again

I am working my way through the BG series and this is my favourite to date. A tremendous blend of fact and fiction. Beautifully narrated by Jonathan Keeble.

Philip Kerr’s best yet

A fitting addition to the Bernie Gunther series with a murder in Berlin and a murder in Prague being tied together. The fundamental problem for me in this series is the narration by Jonathan Keeble. He does the other characters perfectly well, but his voice for Gunther is all wrong - almost painful sounding at times. It’s so distracting I actually returned other books in the series before listening to them. If you can deal with the voice then a satisfying yarn.

Wrong voice for Bernie Gunther

Possibly my favourite procedural- where the humanity of the author shines through that of his protagonist

Brilliant admixture of procedural and historical research
