Summary

If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome!

Praetorian is the gripping eleventh novel in Simon Scarrow's best-selling Eagles of the Empire series. Essential reading for fans of Bernard Cornwell and Conn Iggulden.

AD 51. Legionaries Cato and Macro have forged a bond that has survived war, rebellion and torture. Yet nothing has prepared them for a daunting mission on the deadliest battlefield of all: the bloody streets of Rome.

Traitors are threatening to plunge the Empire into bloody chaos and no one can be trusted. The Emperor has ordered Cato and Macro to go on a deadly mission, working undercover to root out the traitors before Rome tears itself apart.

As the true scale of the corruption dawns, they realise they are facing terrifying odds. Two men against many, in a desperate race to save not only the Empire, but each other....

Good but not his best...

So many people slated the narrator, so much do I nearly never read the book but glad I did. He does sound a bit Monty Python but he's not that bad, worthwhile read...

Saliva

Absolutely love Simon Scarrow and his books and this was one of my favourite ones. Just a shame that all I could hear from the narrator was the saliva in his mouth while he was speaking

Probably the best so far. Narration was terrible

Great addition to the series, probably my favourite but Gareth isn’t the best at narration.

Praetorian

I am more disappointed with some of the previous reviews than I am the book. Yes, it’s different in that there is no mass army to beat and there’s a “who done it” element
, but I enjoyed the story and the banter between Cato and Macro. The new narrator, I thought he was fine, slightly different voices obviously but not to the point where it became distracting as it did in other books. This book has left me wanting to strangle Narcissus even more, but move on to the next book to see if Macro gets there first!

Disappointed by reader.

These are great stories but I'm fed up with the constantly changing readers. This one has two characters: a posh school master and a posh school pupil, neither are appropriate for these characters. Sorry, but it's a distraction.

amazing

If you're a fan of Roman fiction, then you absolutely have to check out this series of books. They are simply perfect, and the Audible version is made even better thanks to the incredible performance by Jonathan Keeble. His narration is pitch-perfect, keeping the pace just right and bringing all the right emotions to the story. It's so refreshing to find an audiobook where the reader doesn't let you down, and Keeble absolutely nails it with this one. So if you're looking for a gripping, immersive Roman adventure, look no further than this series - you won't regret it!

Love all but this

I am an avid fan of this storyline and I honestly sincerely struggled to finish this one I don't know whether it was the story or whether it was the person actually reading it but the voice the actions that didn't really feel like there was much in it and the way that they spoke about macro and keto they weren't the same people they were very different and it felt different but I'm glad it's over hopefully the next one will be better sorry Simon but I've loved anything up to now

Brilliant

So so good, but getting no sleep. I can't wait to see how things end, yet at the same time, I never want macro and cato to finish.
If I have one complaint, it's the different dialects when there were no such things as brummies, cockneys, northerners etc. Apart from that and the faux par about the enima, just brilliant.

Great book, great story, great series just read really badly.

Love the books, I read these when they first came out and loved them and now that there on audible, amazing.
Unfortunately the auditor of these book just does not have the voice spectrum for it, Macro is a grizzled veteran that in other books has a gruff hard voice as you would expect, but this reader at times make him sound like an extra on a a slightly violent “Hancock’s half hour” episode, I expect Sid James to make an appearance in scaled armour at any minute, along with Cato sounding like a 16 year old before his voice breaks it can be a slightly less enjoyable listen after listening to other readers.
This reader has read in a couple of books and is not the best, that said I would not miss following the series because of him you just need to get past the voices.

Great Story, Strange Narration

Simon Scarrow produced an incredible novel once again but this was slightly marred by the narration. It didn't upheave the story, but the voices of Macro and Cato had a lot of variability and when trying to voice some characters the voice over was very high pitched and I think it detracted from the atmosphere. Still worth the listen though.
