Summary
'We are Courtneys. We don't have to fight with our fists. We fight with power and money and influence. Nobody can beat us on our own ground.'
A powerful family. A time of war.
Centaine de Thiry Courtney has not only survived but thrived. A successful woman with two sons of her own: Shasa Courtney, the Courtney heir, and Manfred de la Rey, Shasa's half brother, her secret child raised solely by his father. At the time of the Great Depression, Centaine must make difficult decisions to ensure the security of her family - decisions that will affect Manfred and his father, Lothar de la Rey, a man Centaine once loved.
But the world is changing, and conflicts greater than any the world has seen before are looming. Centaine and her children must face the upcoming war - where not all of them will be on the same side....

Great story telling
Both writer and narrator are excellent storytellers. great way to learn history. Wilbur Smiths ability ro describe the simplest detail is amazing.

Superb
How could anyone accuse Wilbur Smith of racism? His research and writing is historically accurate and so the South Africa he unfolds is fascinating but brutally unattractive. Nevertheless Power Of The Sword is a gripping story that leaves any attentive reader without doubt about Smith’s allegiances.

Still amazed with Wilbur
This is the only series that even after listening to multiple books I can’t wait to listen to the next one, every character is unique and interesting. I am also a huge fan of the narrator who allows you to be engrossed in the story.

Highly recommended
Power of the sword is the first Wilbur Smith novel I have read/listened to. I found it very interesting and thought provoking. An excellent story expertly narrated.

Evocative, brilliant
As an English speaking South African born just after the war, I can relate to so much of this story. It brought back uncomfortable memories.
The narrator is so good thank his Afrikaans pronunciation can be forgiven.

Sad but interesting
I felt sad through out the book, but this doesn't stop me from saying how each book of this series is amusing in it's own way

Spoilt rich kids…
Love the Courtney series but struggle to sympathise at times with the privileged rich behaviour especially as many have such humbled/tragic beginnings…
