About this listen

Bloomsbury presents Post Mortem by Gary Bell, read by Hugh Kermode.

Can Rook keep his criminal past a secret when facing the most dangerous case of his life?

Thirteen men have died in a London prison. Barrister Elliot Rook QC, who risks losing everything if his secret criminal past is revealed, must defend Charli Meadows, the vulnerable single mother accused of smuggling the deadly tainted drugs inside.

But just as Rook becomes suspicious of those closest to Charli, a note arrives at his flat – threatening violence if the trial is not called off.

While Rook battles to defend Charli and protect himself, his young protégé Zara Barnes is fighting for her livelihood. In a few short weeks, only one tenancy at the legal chambers will be available to the ever-multiplying mass of pupils. Determined to make it hers, Zara takes on her biggest solo case yet.

But will her gamble pay off?

Enjoyed the first one so much I used a full credit to get the second (usually a 2 for 1 sale type!). It didn’t disappoint - plot with lots of twists, excellent narration and without giving too much away, a pleasing ending for one of the characters.

Excellent sequel - keep them coming!

This is the second book I have listened too by this author and I downloaded it immediately after the first I enjoyed it so much. The characters are fantastically drawn and well developed and the story gripping. Excellent narration too. Can’t wait for more!

Gripping legal tale

Very well weaved story with a huge twist at the end that I didn’t foresee. Looking forward to the next day legal adventures of Elliot and Barns.

Very enjoyable, a real page turner.

Queen's Council / Barrister Elliot Rook & Junior / Pupil 'rookie' barrister Zara, are a formidable & likeable team, whose disadvantaged backgrounds give them an edge, unite them. They join forces again, when their separate, drug related court cases become entwinned.
Thoroughly enjoyed this legal thriller with it's unforeseen twists. Being a dog lover, that Rook rescued a battered, cowering caged bait dog, kept her, named her Atticus from To Kill A Mocking Bird was a winning touch.
The insider knowledge of author Gary Bell, a real life QC (now King's Council), who too like his book's main character, fabricated a posh background to become barrister really gives his stories credibility.
Bought Post Mortem, along with Beyond Reasonable Doubt, the first in this series & also rated 5 Stars, in a '2 for 1' Sale, it was an excellent use of a Credit, and I look forward to the next case.

Rook & Rookie!

Simon Michael’s Charles Holborne (1960s barrister in gangland London), meets Cormoran strike… part two. I hope there are lots more of these! I like the fact that, despite a couple of unlikely coincidences in the plot, our hero Elliot rook is more flawed and human. Interesting plots with tons of detail. Looking forward to the next one!

Loved it
