Summary

To Porterhouse College, Cambridge, famous for rowing, low academic standards. and a proud cuisine, comes a new Master, an ex-grammar-school boy, demanding Firsts, women students, a self-service canteen, and a slot-machine for contraceptives. There is considerable opposition to this challenge to the established order, in the form of Skullion, the intransigent porter at Porterhouse, who is determined that the hallowed traditions of the College will never change.

Hilarious

Superb story.
Mostly good but some of GRJs characters a bit grating. Was difficult to discern between them at some stages.

Great plot, well read

Although not the funniest Sharpe novel, Gryff does a good job bringing the characters out. I much prefer PG Wodehouse read by Jonathan Cecil

Ironic

Would you listen to Porterhouse Blue again? Why?

The story is the ultimate irony in that the porter scullion becomes master of Porterhouse by accident and suffers the traditional masters fate of a Porterhouse Blue.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Scullion as he represents traditionalism.

Have you listened to any of Griff Rhys Jones’s other performances? How does this one compare?

havent listened to others but will look out for them now.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no but it lends itself to reading in parts

Any additional comments?

I liked the David Jason portrayal on tv and am glad I bothered to read the book.

Wonderful story and well read

Very enjoyable narration of this wonderful book. It has to be heard as it was written; not too seriously. Lay back and listen to a world that is parodied so well. Very British humour.

Classic satire

Great and very funny book well read. Occasionally some background knowledge of Cambridge would be helpful but given some of the places are made up anyway its not too important.

Others were better

Struggled to finish this book. The narration didn't work for me. I've really enjoyed his books in the past though
