Summary

The Maude is outside. It wants to come in.

It wants to sit on your chest.

The mentally ill patients in Beechway High Secure Unit are highly suggestible. A hallucination can spread like a virus. When unexplained power cuts lead to a series of horrifying incidents, fear spreads from the inmates to the staff. Amidst the growing hysteria, AJ, a senior psychiatric nurse, is desperate to protect his charges.

Detective Inspector Jack Caffery is looking for the corpse of a missing woman. He knows all too well how it feels to fail to find a loved one’s body. When AJ seeks Caffery’s help in investigating the trouble at Beechway, each man must face a bitter truth in his own life. Before staring pure evil in the eye.

Poppet, You won't want to Stop it!

What did you like most about Poppet?

I love Mo Hayder's books and this one did not disappoint! I loved the way the story starts with different strands that become intertwined in a complex and compelling story! It gets more and more readable at every twist and turn! I also enjoy that strands and loose ends that link to other books - Jack Caffrey and Flea Marley!

What did you like best about this story?

I love the way the complex plot draws together and develops. The interesting and believable characters that you meet along the way, Jack Caffrey... one of my faves! Loved OJ and also the characters in the psychiatric wards.

Have you listened to any of Jot Davies’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Jot Davies's was brilliant! I haven't heard her work before but loved this.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It's not for the faint hearted! A few points late at night I had to turn it off as it was too creepy!

Gripping and terrifying

I loved Mo Hayder's early novels but have been so disappointed by the most recent ones that it took me a long time to decide to download this one. I am so glad that I did and cannot wait for the next Jack Caffrey. The beginning is so creepy and terrifying that I almost gave up listening but it is this creepiness that entices you in to the characters and the story. It is so excellently constructed that for most of the novel I really did not know where it was going and was constantly surprised. Unlike many current crime novels Hayder does not resort to cliches but uses plot and excellent characterisation to keep you listening. Jot Davies also narrates this excellently and I hope he continues to narrate the Caffrey series.

Well worth it, poppet!

What made the experience of listening to Poppet the most enjoyable?

Great story which begins with many different threads and spins them nicely into a compelling story. Great characters, strong plot, a few twists (though I did anticipate the ending (ish))!

Anything else written by Mo Hayder - her work is excellent.

Which character – as performed by Jot Davies – was your favourite?

All of them were excellent, particularly OJ.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

Absolutely brilliant.

Outstanding tale, complex, but each thread drew me in more and more, it’s dark and sometimes graphic, however it’s purposefully written and is definitely my kind of ‘dark.

Best not to listen to at night when on your own...

Mo Hayder's stories scare the beejesus out of me, and still I cannot stop, I just enjoy the scary stuff!
This book doesn't disappoint, and I'm glad I got the audiobook, because the narration is also very very good. From the very beginning, there are two stories intertwined: one, concerning a disappeared person, who sees Jack Caffrey involved from the start, and the other story, taking place in the mental hospital, that slowly creeps into Caffrey's line of work. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoiling the book to other readers, but while I didn't guess the end, I knew that some things "were not as they seemed"... enough said!
Get now yourself scared and listen to Mo Hayder!
