In Politics: A Very Short Introduction, Kenneth Minogue begins with a discussion of issues arising from a historical account of politics and goes on to offer chapters dealing with the Ancient Greeks and the idea of citizenship; Roman law; medieval Christianity and individualism; freedom since Machiavelli and Hobbes; the challenge of ideologies; democracy, oligarchy, and bureaucracy; power and order in modern society; and politics in the West.

Superb introduction for a total newcomer to politics. I enjoyed the intonation and energy of the narration, and the content is pithy and succinct yet clear.

He’s clearly a conservative trying to be balanced but fails badly. His active dislike of the young made 45 year old me balk. if you are about to study politics at university then be aware he heavily disagrees with modern academic thinking and paints it as wrong. Very disappointing because usually the references in these books are how you get to dive deeper.

Opinion dressed up as fact.
