Summary

Polgara is the epic culmination of a magnificent saga, and a fitting farewell to a world which, once experienced, will never be forgotten.

She soars above a world of warriors, kings, and priests. The daughter of Belgarath and the shape-shifter Poledra, she has fought wars, plotted palace coups, and worked her powerful magic for three thousand years. Now, Polgara looks back at her magnificent life, in this fitting crown jewel to the saga that is the Eddings' Belgariad and Mallorean cycles.

Her hair streaked white by her father's first touch, her mind guided by a mother she will not see again for centuries, Polgara begins life in her Uncle Beldin's tower, and in the prehistorical, magical Tree that stands in the middle of the Vale. There, she first learns the reaches of her powers. There she assumes the bird shapes that will serve her on her adventures. And there she starts on the path toward her destiny as Duchess of Erat, shepherdess of the cause of good, adversary of Torak the One-Eyed Dragon God, and guardian of the world's last, best hope: the heir to the Rivan throne.

Here is the legendary life story of a woman of wit, passion, and complex emotions, a woman born of two majestic parents who could not have been more unlike one another. Ordained to make peace and make war, to gain love and lose love, Polgara lives out her family's rich prophecy in the ceaseless struggle between the Light and the Dark.

Terrible Narration spoils a fantastic book. Skip.

I've listened to this book before read by another narrator. The book is fantastic and one of my all time favourites, alongside the rest of the series. This version however is in my view completely spoilt by bad narration. The queen of Riva is a young queen in her early 20's when this story takes place. The narrator however gives her such a wavering gravely voice that you could easily think she is in her 80's. That set my teeth on edge immediatly. she is described as having a sweet girlish voice. Do the narrators never read the book ahead of creating the character voices. Polgara on the other hand is given a voice more suited to a young woman, when she is in fact thousands of years old, This is correct though as she 'decided' to stay the age she was and while the voice can be forgiven it is still too young for her and comes across as skittery and brainless. This again is in complete contrast to the character.

I shopped the playback at that point as I listen to Eddings books as a form of relaxation. sort of like sitting down with an old friend for a chat. This version however had my blood boiling withing a few minutes and was anything but relaxing.

For those that do not know the characters yet it may not irratate as much, but will still be very obvious that the voices do not suite the characters at all.

If you want to listen to this book, Look for the Cameron Bierlie version. Fantastic narrator and always does his characters proud.

I will be requesting a refund on this version.

Much more like it

I recently reviewed and rated the brother book to this one as extremely poor due to the narrator, indeed I gave up on after only a short period.

However this production was excellent. I think with the possible exception of Ce'Nedra, Dina Pearlman managed to pull off the characterisations brilliantly. Carmeron Beierle still sits atop the pile for me though.

I can strongly recomend this production to all Eddings fans. The story is a crisp as ever and Dina P. does a wonderful job of bringing the story to life.

Fantastic book!

I bought this audiobook with some trepidation - Polgara the Sorceress was (and still is) one of my favourite books growing up, I was therefore slightly concerned that it would have been mangled like many of the other sci fi/fantasy type books on here.

fear not! it's brilliantly read, once you get used to the American pronounciations (and over the 'I don't pronounce Ctuchik like that!' issues) and had me totally addicted very quickly, much like the book.

Now if only the guy reading Belgarath the Sorcerer was as good...!

Great story, awful narrator.

Terrible narrator. Pronunciation of words changes frequently and lots of mistakes are made Eg. "picked him up bloodily" instead of bodily. There are also some sentences that have been edited, sometimes the sentence ends where it's obvious that there were more words to follow and other times its obvious that two sentences have been tacked together, so the beginning has no relation to the end.
The narration had me thoroughly exasperated at times. I had just finished listening to Belgarath the Socerer and would have liked the proper nouns to have been pronounced the same way as these are meant to be accounts from a father and daughter.
Fantastic story from the point of view of Polgara, telling her story of the tasks she was given by the Necessity, how she accomplished them and her feelings.
Love the book and will definitely be avoiding anything narrated by Dina Pearlman.

Why change the pronunciation after 11 books?

The story is great, with wonderful details and revalations. I accept that every narrator gives their own interpretation to the characters, however why was it necessary to change the pronunciation of names and places so drastically after 11 books in the same world. It annoyed me enormously. The Characterisation of Poledra wasn't very convincing either.

Spoiled by terrible narration

If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

No idea

Who was your favorite character and why?

Polgara ~ always a favourite of mine

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Just awful ~ it grated on my nerves. I only managed 2 chapters and gave up. Ce'Nedra sounded like an old crone when she is a very young woman and that was just the start.

What character would you cut from Polgara the Sorceress?

Sorry to say I did not get far enough in the book to comment on this.

Any additional comments?

I did read the reviews which is why I tried this one and not Belgarath. Foolish mistake. Personally I did not particularly enjoy Cameron Beierle narrating the other two series by David Eddings BUT he was 100 times better than this narration. Sorry, not for me

Have the paperback.

As stated in the title, I have the paperback and love this book. Truly devastated by the pronunciation of names and places but worst of all, is the voice of C'Nedra. How horrific! She sounds nothing like this impish, mischievous yet lovable character she is. Instead, she sounds older than the 7000+ year old Belgarath!! Total injustice.

Great story, inconsistent narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Definitely recommended. A great story especially if you have read the Belgariad and the other stories in this series.

What other book might you compare Polgara the Sorceress to, and why?

Similar to Belgarath the Sorceror in that it wraps up neatly the history behind the cracking of the world and the events that transpired before Garion was born.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration was poor and inconsistent in places. Often the same names would be pronounced in different ways which made it hard to listen to at times.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There are several sad sections where Polgara loses close family which will make you feel very upset.

Any additional comments?

If you can get past the poor reading of the book it is well worth a listen.
