Summary

The first four series of the original BBC Radio 4 fantastical drama series set in a world almost, but not quite, like our own.

Paul Hilton stars as William Palmer, the immortal, reluctant and unthanked hero protecting mankind from an enemy they resist believing in: the Grey Folk.

Thrilling, dark and contemporary, the dramas are set in a recognisable present day but one haunted by the folktales of the British Isles: drowned villages, changeling children, werewolves and unruly nature spirits.

Excellent and fascinating

A BBC production is always good, the actors are fine but I confess that I found the sound effects quite bewildering at times. The book seems to be based on British folk tales and you gain a strong sense of that through the whole thing.

The first "episode" (remembering that this was broadcast in instalments) drops you straight into the middle of Pilgrim's life story. Each episode or chapter is an individual tale around a few main protagonists involving very long time frame as it turns out. I had no idea what was happening for much of the first few chapters/episodes and mostly because in a drama, as opposed to a book, much detail is left unexplained and the sound effects are not self explanatory, merely noisy and confusing, but the quality of the performers kept me involved.

I'm glad I stuck with it and was sorry there wasn't more by the time the book ended.

Recommend listening for those who enjoy a touch of mystery and magic set in countryside Britain where the old ways could still exist, where one could walk the ancient paths.

Fairytales for grown ups

Would you listen to Pilgrim: The Collected Series 1-4 again? Why?

This is my third time listening through this series and it still has not got old. The characters are exceptionally well written and easy to identify with, the stories contain all the fantastical elements of childhood fairytales and intersect with each other fluidly and naturally. Once the journey begins it's very hard to tear yourself away.

Who was your favorite character and why?

"Baby" Kingsley and his "parents". The dialogue is so rich with description and implication, so easy (and perversely delightful) to visualize.

Any additional comments?

Magical in the sense it can take you far, far away from the daily grind. Wonderful.

I really loved this.

great radio play, playing to the feel of a wicker man type world, where the super natural meets the normal, and William Palmer is our reluctant guide. some dodgy story lines but the cast really pulls it back on track and can get drama from the most strange occurrences.

Very well acted good story line

I haven't listened or read much fantasy fiction but I'm very glad I gave this a try. The author blends lots of different historical and mythical tales to come up with a series of interlinked stories. The cast are excellent. I can't think how I missed this on the radio it's a gem.
I'm now off to start series 5 - 7.

Pilgrim

Superb. enthralling. I was so disappointed when it ended . rather than one reader or was a host of talented actors. I would truly recommend this production.

Great Characters, great production and great story. Took me an episode or two to really get into it, but was hooked after that.

Love this series.

Wonderful stories, poetic dialogue. Love the modern fairy fantasy. The central performance especially (Pilgrim) is great.

Brilliant

A first class fully cast radio serial which kept me addicted from start to finish. It was so well presented it was actually amazing that I took three sessions to listen to it.

It blended humour fantasy and suspense and you felt sympathy for Pilgrim who after nearly a thousand years just wants to die ( not a spoiler as this fact is made clear from the beginning of the first episode).

There are treacherous characters and those you can really sympathise with all done with a full cast in an excellent way by the BBC,

Just got series 5 - 7 and I am hoping the excellent standard continues

Like a fantasy version of Doctor Who

Preformed by the BBC with a style reminiscent of old time radio shows. It's like The Shadow meets Dr. Who with a fantasy twist.

very fae

I'm a big fan of this genre and I can't read or watch TV at the moment because of some medical issues so this was a treat.

Like all radio shows it's up to the audience to paint the scenes in their minds eye.

Mainly I just really liked it because it wasn't all fairy people and humans falling in love.
It's the kind of fae stories that makes you wonder why they're called the good folk.

there's better radio drama out there

The premise of this story is so interesting I thought I would love it but the writing is really weak - just lots of characters repeating what the previous character just said and lots of shouting. Maybe the books are better. Would not recommend.

Confusing

Very difficult to follow..audio skips around between scenes and characters. The stories were very imaginative but poorly executed.

Audible Quality is Shockingly Bad

Never again will I listen to an AudioDrama via Audible. To use a 300mb file for an 11Hr AudioDrama is disgusting. This is an audio movie! With full score and sound effects. Normally AudioDrama use at least 100mb per hour; ∴ 11Hrs = 1.1 GB instead this recording is an offensive 30% quality. It’s not good enough. Sounds are distorted, voices clipped. It’s just sad. I feel so bad for the creators, this is not a far representation of their beautiful work. The thing is the story and production is amazing! If interested please please go buy the CD at Book Depositary. And never ever buy AudioDrama from Audible.
