Summary

Journalist Joe Oakes makes a living exposing supernatural hoaxes, but when he visits a secretive religious cult on a remote Scottish island, everything he thought he knew is overturned. While investigating a strange apparition caught briefly on film wandering the lonely beaches of Pig Island, so deformed it can hardly be human, Oakes crosses a border of electrical fencing, toxin-filled oil drums, and pigs' skulls to infiltrate the territory of the group's isolated founder, Malachi Dove. The violent consequences of Oakes' transgression are so catastrophic that it forces him to question the nature of evil and to face a terrible reality: Was Dove responsible for one of the bloodiest crimes Scotland has seen in years?

What a shame.

Promising start, well written. Sadly after I’d worked out how the plot was constructed, that was a few pages into the protagonist’s return to the island, it was a matter of waiting for the inevitable and having my suspicions confirmed. Must admit I skimmed the last chapters.
Might amuse on a long haul flight.

Another great Mo Hayder

I liked the characters in this, a little slow in places, I also like the narrative from two perspectives.

You’re a really useful engine Thomas

This is like a thriller being read by ringo star in Thomas the tank guise. It’s jarring.
Dull and just odd choice of reader.

Great for boring you to sleep

This book is absolutely awful, if you’re thinking of a Mo Hayder book don’t pick this one. So slow it almost ground to a halt with repetitive writing devises that bored me to tears. This is not good horror or good writing.
The narration on this was also very irritating and monotone.
The only thing this book was good for was helping me get off to sleep.

Average story which runs at an average pace. I would not read again however it did fill a few hours.

Mo Hayder, REALLY?

I have liked everything Mo Hayder has written until I came to this. I have persisted for two hours and now given up. Very wooden and unengaging

I thought I was a Hayder fan...

This is absolutely terrible! Couldn't even finish it! The characters are terrible, the story line is terrible and the narrator isn't much cop either. Mo, I'm not angry, just very disappointed!!!
