FROM THE BELOVED SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR

WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU PUT YOURSELF FIRST?

Dol has spent her life holding everything — and everyone — together. But she's done being perfect.

Now it's time to be herself.

Dol Westward has always been the dependable one — the steady hand, the peacekeeper, the fixer. Especially when it comes to her unpredictable mother, Marigold. But after years of putting everyone else first, she’s starting to wonder what’s left for her.

When life begins to fray around the edges, Dol realises she’s been chasing an idea of perfection that was never really hers. Old habits, old expectations — they’re hard to break. But maybe imperfection is the only place she can finally feel free...

Funny, moving and full of hope, Picture Imperfect is a story about family, love and discovering that life doesn't have to be perfect to be wonderful — from the beloved author who always writes real life, honestly told.

Wilson knocks it out of the park once again...a moving story that is as fun to read as it is meaningful.
She is a national treasure.
Realistic, sharp eyed...I loved it and didn’t want it to end.

Having listened to think again and now picture imperfect I can fully say u love Jaqueline Wilson’s new idea to follow on from childhood stories. The way this book is written is beautiful and full of problems and conundrums just like all her books! Well worth the listen. Wanted more at the end tho…

Dolphin’s character was well developed, and references to the original book were subtle. I liked how Star wasn’t really a main character as it emphasises Dolphin’s loneliness as an adult. I found the Lavender Hall storyline a little far fetched but I think that’s why I found it so nostalgic as the tone was so similar to JW’s children’s books! I’ve started listening a second time through already.

Nostalgic

I felt like it was a bit repetitive and spelled out the obvious. maybe I was hoping for a happier storyline too, but I just didn't enjoy it as much as I have her other stuff. I found the characters a little grating, but like I said I think that's because it wasn't a super happy storyline maybe?

not as good as her other book following on from her old book

I used to read the JW books to my daughter, even when she was perfectly able to read them to herself. We both enjoyed them.

That was over 20 years ago (incredibly) so the plot lines of the books are quite hazy.

Marigold was a more interesting character in the original. In this one she came across as a narcissist, selfish, unlikeable. I appreciate she has a mental illness but she had more going for her in the original. She comes across as a belligerent and rather boring old woman in this book, partly due to the narration - yet she is still only in her 50s.

The narrator tried hard but Lee sounded very dull with this rather dumb, plodding sounding voice. I appreciate he was not intended to be an exciting character but I think this would have been subtler if reading rather than listening.

Marigold sounded older than she is. The little girl sounded unnatural. But I appreciate it is very hard for one person to do justice to such a variety of characters.

I suppose because I know JW as a children’s author, the quite frequent sex scenes and references to sex felt wrong and a bit wince inducing, partly because it still had a slightly “kids book” feel to it - but with adult themes. That might be just me.

There are some relatable parts about Dol wanting her own space with no-one directing her or claiming her, yet at the same time wanting love. No perfect relationships here.

Anyway, I quite enjoyed it and the ending makes me think there might be a book 3 and if there is, I will probably read it.

Quite good but…

As someone who was around Dol's age when the first book came out, I read The Illustrated Mum til I was cross eyed. Bringing Dol into modern times was always going to be difficult since the book was a huge part of lots of people's reading childhood.

Is it perfect? No. Did I love it anyway? Yes. I completely believed that adult Dol was a realistic adult version of the little girl in the first book. I liked the story and the characters had good depth.

The only thing that stuck out was the same thing I've always thought about JWs books (even when I was a kid reading the children's books). The dialogue just isn't realistic. I don't know any 33 year old who says things like "I feel a fool" and "ever so" and I didn't know any teens that said these things in the noughties either! Other than that, I enjoyed it.

It ends quite abruptly - perhaps a sequel is coming?

This was always going to be tricky...
