Summary

Lady Georgiana Rannoch and her dashing husband, Darcy, are awaiting a bundle of joy, but an unexpected trip to Paris will thrust them straight into a tangled web of international intrigue in this all-new mystery in the New York Times best-selling Royal Spyness series from Rhys Bowen.

What a delight it is to finally be able to enjoy a simple meal again! I have been in the throes of morning sickness for the last few months as Darcy and I prepare to welcome a brand-new addition to our little family. Now that I am feeling better, I have realized I am dreadfully bored! It seems that all my nearest and dearest are off leading their own busy lives while I sit at home and attempt to train our two adorably naughty puppies. Fun as it may be, it is hard not to long for a little adventure, a change of pace, before my true confinement begins when the baby comes.

Happily, it seems that Darcy has read my mind. When I receive a letter from my glamorous best friend, Belinda, Darcy suggests we take a trip to Paris to visit her. It seems he also has a spot of business of which to take care, so I will be staying in Belinda’s flat as she works feverishly on Coco Chanel’s fall collection. I happen to know Coco from a disastrous encounter in Nice years ago, and I am hoping this visit will go much more smoothly. But I soon learn that nothing about my time in Paris is going to be simple . . . or safe for that matter.

Darcy has asked me to take on a small chore as a part of his latest assignment. I am to covertly retrieve something from an attendee of Coco’s show. It seems easy enough, but I discover that this little errand could have terrifying consequences for a world on the brink of war. When things go horribly wrong, I am left to find a killer all while trying to fend off a French policeman who is certain that I am a criminal mastermind. But I have no plans to deliver my darling little one in a prison cell, and so I will muster every ounce of my courage to save the day . . . and, quite possibly, the world!

peril in paris

as usual the narrator was brilliant. I love this series, although I pretty much guessed whodunnit very early on. such an enjoyable listen

spoilt for me by the narrator

God Rest Ye, Royal Gentlemen also suffered from the change in narrator. The previous narrator seemed more as I expected Lady Georgie to sound. I found the forced pronunciation off putting.

Not upto usual standard

I have listened to many of Rhys Bowen books and usually thoroughly enjoyed them.
Maybe it is because of a change of narrator and I am familiar with the voices of Kathleen that I could not enjoy Jasmins interpretations of the cast.
I didn’t enjoy the storyline and thought it went on and on.

Loved the story, struggling with the narration

This narrator is best suited for reading Mary Poppins or other children’s book perhaps. There way too much enthusiasm for the simplest sentence and the main character sounds like a mature Queen Elizabeth. Struggle through though and you may enjoy the story.

Weakest of the series so far.

The basic story is OK, but noticeably lacks the humour and charm of earlier books.
Almost the whole story is in handful of rooms in Paris. I was disappointed.

Nothing better than a Her Royal Spyness mystery

The characters come alive each time I listen to one of the stories in the series . These books have depth to the story but also are fun to listen to. The narration is wonderful !

Another must listen

Loved the continued story and escapades that Georgie finds her self in. I’m not entirely sure of the historical accuracy for the time period, but a great listen nonetheless.

I have mixed feelings about this book…

I read / listen to all of Lady Giorgiana’s book, and I always find them easy listening and entertaining, but this was my least favorite so far.

Actually this book is entertaining, the problem for me is that there are 35 chapters but NOTHINGS happens in the first 12 or 13 chapters: very frustrating!

Georgie and Darcy are off to Paris, he to do a bit of work, she to visit Belinda and spend some time with her mother, who happens to be in Paris too, but before we see any action we have to endure so many detailed (and to me useless) descriptions.

The mystery itself it’s entertaining, but simple compared to previous books from this series.

This narrator does a great job, it’s just that this book is too slow for me.

Yawn… Plot had Promise, but Failed to Deliver

When will Georgie grow up? How many times and ways does she really have to say, “I don’t know what to do” or “What do I do?”? This was written so often that even the narrator struggled to make it sound fresh and original angst.
Moreover, Darcy is coming across more like a bully and a very inept spy. He’s not at all loveable or a strong manly man gentleman. (Spoiler alert) Who leaves his pregnant wife who is in danger in a foreign country for a bit of homebase face-to-to face tête la tête?
I’m so sorry to say that this latest adventure of the royal spy came across as a plodding cookie cutter money maker.
Still not loving the new narrator.
