Summary

Disappointing

Writing about the 2nd World War from the perspective of two families and particularly their young children offered interesting possibilities but at about 20 hours this was too long. Despite some well written episodes, Ilse and the geese and bonfire of the vanities to name just two, there was not enough to lift the reader's spirits amid the long sequence of miserable and disturbing events which continued even after the war ended. At times the narrative seemed as pointless and lost as the Hahlbrooks' "pilgrimage".
