Summary

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER FROM THE BRITISH BOOK AWARD WINNING AUTHOR OF QUEENIE

If you could choose your family, you wouldn't choose the Penningtons

Dimple, Nikisha, Danny, Lizzie and Prynce are half-siblings who don't have much in common except abandonment issues. But when a catastrophic event forces them to reconnect with each other and with Cyril Pennington, the absent father they never really knew, things start to get complicated fast . . .

People Person is a propulsive story of heart, humour and homecoming, about the true nature of family and the complexities of belonging.

Wanted to enjoy it but felt like an endurance test

As a daughter of a single mother with seven half siblings scattered about who share the same absent, bus driving father obsessed with designer labels and an Audi there was a lot of relatable elements within this story. The author gets it spot on with her depiction of the London West Indian experience from the turmeric crumbs of patties to the scent of eau de Dettol that hangs in the air of houses stuffed to the rafters with doilies, China figurines and mahogany cabinets crammed with rum and butter biscuits in tins. Some of the key characters were also well sketched, although Dimple felt super draining and Danny’s story despite- highlighting the lack of a paternal figure for young men- felt a bit tagged on.

Anyway, the nuts and bolts were there but the plot just didn’t feel convincing and so it dragged. Was desperate for the characters to thrive within a more challenging and believable situation tight with tension (Kieran was a bully but pretty quiet during the peak of his blackmailing and eventually folded pretty quickly proving the whole thing could have been dealt with within early chapters.)

I don’t know my siblings very well, hardly at all, and wouldn’t get involved if any of them were even in trouble for shoplifting, let alone risk being an accessory to whatever it was that didn’t even really go down. Maybe if my late father had forced a meeting in our teens things would have been different, but very much doubt it.

Loved Queenie and think the author is a good writer but this felt a little premature and like a follow up to a #1 hit single that needed to be delivered whilst the iron was still hot. That said, would definitely read more of her work as feel confident there’s a lot of good stuff to come from her in the future. Hats off to the extremely talented narrator who kept me interested when probably would have stopped half way if reading a physical copy.

5 stars all round

I’m usually slow with audiobooks but I consumed People Person in just a few days - the characters and story are fantastic, as is the brilliant narration which I really enjoyed. This book was so good that Dimple and her siblings followed me to the gym, cleaning my house, and on my way to and from work. I felt like I knew all of the characters and am already missing them. Highly recommend ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Really enjoyable story

I loved Queenie and while there are some similarities between herself and Dimple, this is very much an original story, told expertly.

The narrator is excellent, accents are fantastic and really add to the listening experience... I did hear her stumble and repeat a sentence (with 5houra remaining) but we are all human and it made me smile if anything.

Addictive

I couldn't stop listening. So well narrated with great characters and a relatable but equally dramatic and funny storyline. Loved Queenie and thoroughly enjoyed People Person, really looking forward to more from Candice Carty-Williams

Amazingly Narrated

I loved this story. The way the narrator made the listener feel engaged was spoke was what drew me in. I cried at the end of the story. The way 1 man brought all 5 lives together was beautiful. I loved Prince, I love how we got feel the emotions of each character. This is by far one of my favourite listens this year

Fab story and narration

Had me laughing, crying and deeply thoughtful about parenting and siblinghood. Great story, beautifully narrated.
