About this listen

When the ever-enthusiastic and high-spirited Penny Pollard accompanies her friend Alistair and his mum (a long-suffering chaperone) on a tour of the United Kingdom, the results are hilariously unpredictable. Penny proves herself to be a very busy and unusual tourist as she looks for the Loch Ness monster, works out the true meaning of Stonehenge, dabbles in a bit of match-making, and makes new friends from different parts of the world.

Editor reviews

Narrator Rebecca Macaulay provides a high-spirited, impish performance of Penny Pollard's adventures as she goes on a tour of the United Kingdom with her friend Alistair and his long-suffering mum. Penny's voice has just the right touch of mischief and enthusiasm as she barrels through her holiday looking for the Loch Ness monster, deciphering Stonehenge, getting some match-making done, and making new friends. Macaulay also narrates the diary entries, letters, and miscellaneous notes that pepper this story with a pleasure that listeners will surely share.

Critic reviews

"Penny Pollard is her quirky, funny self, but this time she's in the UK. When her radical friend, Alistair, wins a trip, he invites Penny to join him and his mother. The result is two very different viewpoints from the friends as they become tourists. Alistair claims that even babies had to toil in the mines in their diapers while Penny searches for the Loch Ness monster and tries to match up fellow tourists. Narrator Rebecca Macauley is winning in many nationalities, including that of the tour guide who comes to life at trip's end (tip time). This story is just for fun or an excellent way to prepare kids for an international trip." (AudioFile Magazine)
