Summary

The 15th novel in the highly acclaimed Dave Robicheaux series.

Dave Robicheaux still feels guilt over a tragic event he wasn't sober enough to prevent. Dallas Klein, a gambling addict and buddy, was killed in an armed robbery he'd been forced to engineer. Two decades later, several incidents in Dave's life in Iberia Parish link to those involved. First he meets Dallas' daughter, Trish, who keeps odd company and is blackballed by the local casinos. Then the supposed suicide of a young girl appears to be connected to the man Dallas owed money to.

Dave gets involved with two powerful criminals, both wanting to protect their sons from the trouble they court, and both with the attitude of the privileged and white. When a young black drug dealer gets on the wrong side of the boys, there are more needless deaths.

Powerful stuff

Dave and Clete take on the ugly underworld of the deep south amid racial tensions and unremitting violence. Pure class from a fabulous author.

Is this the finest Robicheaux novel?

Excellent writing and very well acted. I’m a big fan so I’m a little biased but this was EXCELLENT. A real thriller. Listen to it!

Love the main characters in this book

Will Patton turned in another stellar performance as the narrator of the main character detective Dave. I enjoyed the book thoroughly.

Interlocking and overlapping.

My favourite of the series, excepting Purple Cane Road only - still awaiting that one Audible. Missed 'Alafair' (?) but Tripod and Snugs had several walk-on parts. Totally engrossing but needs your full attention or you'll be forever rewinding. The limpid scenes and landscape, along with the inner dialogue, are as deftly handled as ever. Yes Audible - I thoroughly enjoyed this programme ;-))

Cracking plot, brilliantly read.

Would you listen to Pegasus Descending again? Why?

No. Too many other books to read and listen to.

Who was your favorite character and why?

As always, Tripod - obviously the master mind behind it all.

Have you listened to any of Will Patton’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I have listened to several. I would not wish to rank them - all excellent.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No.

Any additional comments?

No.

Gritty insight into life in southern USA

What did you like best about this story?

its was a good story and it was very insightful into what it might be like to be black in american in the southern states - it felt truthful . It was pacy and pretty grusesome

What does Will Patton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

oh wow what a voice!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

no but it was moving and gripping

Any additional comments?

it was just the sort of book that makes a good audible book - great voice, good plot and works the imagination

Wish I could give more stars!

Will Patton is amazing! James lee Burke’s writing is just so fabulous. Listened to this twice now and I revel in the visions it conjures up. I’ve listened to all of the robicheaux books and they are all fantastic.

Fantastic as always

I love the way James Lee Burke writes. He as an incredible talent to make the reader/listener feel that they are actually present in the story. His characters, plot, intrigue and commentary on life is always on the money.
As for Will Paten, he’s just brilliant, full stop.
