Story
Adam Scott listens to the reading of his father's will, aware that the contents can only be meagre. The Colonel, after all, had nothing to leave - except a letter he had never opened himself, a letter that can only bring further disgrace to the family name. Against his mother's advice, Adam opens the letter, and immediately realizes his life can never be the same again. The contents leave him with no choice but to follow a course his father would have described as a matter of honour.

With no apparent motive, it’s their job to unravel why he was murdered - and this time they’re forced to do it without their star detective...DCI Ryan is thousands of miles away. Nathan Armstrong is a dangerous psychopath but there’s just one problem - he’s also an international celebrity; a world-famous thriller writer with money and connections.
Summary
This is the story of a man who loved two women, and one of them killed him.
Some people have dreams that are so outrageous that if they were to achieve them, their place in history would be guaranteed. Francis Drake, Robert Scott, Percy Fawcett, Charles Lindbergh, Amy Johnson, Edmund Hillary and Neil Armstrong are among such individuals.
But what if one man had such a dream, and when he'd achieved it, there was no proof that he had fulfilled his ambition?
Paths of Glory, is the story of such a man. But not until you've turned the last page of this extraordinary novel, will you be able to decide if George Mallory should be added to this list of legends, because if he were, another name would have to be removed.

fantastic stuff
Fantastic story and Archer really on top form. All the more engaging and moving for being based on real life events with the author 'filling in the gaps'. The narration was good-it seems a little old fashioned but that kind of fits with the era of the story. I recommend this one

Addictive listening.
I found this audio book a fantastic introduction into the historical account of George Mallory's climbing career. Being a huge Archer fan for many years I downloaded this audio book without ever hearing the name 'George Mallory'. I was stunned to discover that the book was based on a real person/s. The narration was wonderful and true. Yet another memorable read/listen from Archer.

A captivating story
I down-loaded this book without hesitation as my previous experiences of Jeffrey Archer's books made me confident that it would be a cracking good listen. I wasn't disappointed: the combination of the author's lively story-telling skills and Roger Allam's first-class reading made this a great listen. Biographical details of the life and achievements of Everest-climber, George Mallory, have been woven into an exciting story, which the author has fleshed out with imaginative and plausible details using evidence from Mallory's mass of wonderful letters to his wife. Though the ending to the story is well- known, the narrative is so riveting I couldn't stop listening.

Paths of Glory
A good faction account of what might have happened to that Mallory Everest expedition. BUT I found the "Jolly Good Chaps" tone of the conversation tedious. A little too simplistic dialogue and story telling - even for a Jeffrey Archer. Disappointing.

The synopsis is misleading
Because I failed to see the 'hidden' meaning in the synopsis I was disappointed in this book, I have no interest in the feats of people who want to achieve ambitions that are beyond most people, and the cause of suffering to those close to them. It's up to them to do as they wish, but I personally don't see the heroism in this.
As this was a Jeffrey archer novel I took the following phrase literally: 'This is the story of a man who loved two women, and one of them killed him.' , I understand the thought behind that phrase, but no way is a mountain a woman!
I realise that I was naive in my reading of this synopsis, but not thinking of the name Mallory with a link to Everest, I was duped.
Anyway!! the story was well written, the characters shown in an interesting way - but because I have no interest whatsoever in the topic of the book I feel that my time has been wasted.

The Road To The Top of The World
Many of us have great ambitions and dream of achieving, but never actually set foot on the ladder to achieving them. This is the gripping tale of a man whose dream of being the first person to set foot on the top of the world obsessed him all his life, and ended up costing him it.
In 2008, the frozen remains of George Mallory were discovered at the base of a rock shelf on Mount Everest, some sixty years after he and his climbing companion disappeared.
Based on fact and on the journals and final diary of Mallory himself, this is an epic tale to keep anyone engrossed. Using his inimitable story-telling skill, Archer takes these facts and weaves them into a tale of personal drive and achievement against unsurmountable odds, class prejudice and Mother Nature herself.
Anyone who has read and enjoyed Archer's work before will not disappointed. For those that haven't, this is the prefect place to start.

Artless and witless
Archer takes a stab at 'faction', which is misguided at best: he's not the world's most skilled wordsmith, and story is all he's got. There is not a single original simile, metaphor or image of any kind in this entire book, just a relentless parade of cliches. He manages to make climbing Everest sound as challenging and arduous as popping out to the newsagents for some cigarettes. Avoid like ... well, the plague.
