Summary

Miss Knag feigns an interest in Kate and invites her and Mrs Nickleby to dinner. The following weekend, Kate is invited to a dinner party hosted by Ralph for some of his prestigious business partners. She is made to feel exceedingly uncomfortable, especially by the forward Sir Mulberry. Kate reprimands Ralph for subjecting her to such a horrible evening.

Nicholas goes to visit Miss La Creevy and asks about his mother and sister. Ralph finally hears word of Nicholas’s conduct in Yorkshire and disowns him. Smike blames himself for Nicholas’s misfortune and attempts to run away.

Great Story - awful narration

I'm a Dickens fan and listen to a lot of his books on audible as I work. As with all audio presentations of the written word the piece is made (or broken) by the narration.
In this case, sadly, it falls very short of the mark. The narrator has a nice voice, deep and rich in tone but doesn't seem to understand what he is reading. His intonation and pronunciation of some words make it appear that he doesn't know what they mean or what the author is trying to say. A lot of Dickens's ironic social commentary is lost through poor narration.
I persevered through 2 episodes but gave up ,as it was like having an itch I couldn't scratch or listening to a tune played with one or 2 notes out of place.
Such a shame but not something that will stay in my library.

Wonderful narration of a wonderful story

The story was new to me and I was concerned that it would be out of place in today’s world. To my delight it was beautifully written and I could relate to the characters. The amazing narration of Kobna Holdbrook Smith should be applauded. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t imagine how long it took him to read it!

Dickens brought to life

Dickens needs no introduction and Kobna Holbrook-Smith is a genius of characterisation. The narration is so perfectly and artistically performed as to make a most enjoyable and beautiful story even better than in printed form. Kobna Holbrook-Smith gives a unique and perfect voice to each character, he’s amazing; so brilliant as a voice actor (is that the right term?). I will look for more audio books narrated by him and highly recommend this book and this narrator.
