Summary
Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Out of the Dark by Gregg Hurwitz.
As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from the orphanage he called home and inducted into a top secret Cold War programme. Trained as a lethal weapon, he and his fellow recruits were sent round the world to do the government's dirty work.
But the programme was rotten to the core. And now the man responsible needs things to be nice and clean. All evidence must be destroyed. That includes Evan.
To survive, Evan's going to have to take the fight to his nemesis. There's just one problem with that. Jonathan Bennett is President of the United States, and Evan isn't his only victim.
To save himself - and the country - Evan is going to have to figure out how to kill the most well-protected man on the planet....

I can listen no longer!
This narrator makes it impossible to continue to listen. He is such a drama queen that I cannot concentrate on WHAT he is saying, only on HOW he is saying it! Life is too short for this nonsense.

Excellent Thriller
I really enjoyed this, the fourth in the Orphan X series. It has great characters, a tantalising plot and plenty of thrilling action. I feel that there is more light and shade in Evan Smoak than there is in Jack Reacher; he actually has some real, though difficult, relationships which allows for the development of characters between and within the novels. Evan Smoak is also reflective and thoughtful in his actions. Obviously he is an indestructible killing machine and racks up a colossal body count but this is an action thriller, not Jane Austin, and few writers can deliver such mayhem as pleasurably as Gregg Hurwitz.

Outstanding!
If you like your Jason bourne style ex assassin with a heart style you will love Evan Smoak. To compare hin to Jason though is unfair as he is way more complex way more brutal but goodness there is so much emotion in these books. Who would of thought you could tear up listening to this type of book. I can only finish by saying Mr Hurwitz is nothing short of genius putting other authors of this genre in the shade . Buy the first book in the series and by the time you reach this one you’ll be desperate for number five.. which actually is out early next year ! Please keep Evan going is all I can say!

Are we ready?
An action hero for the 21st century.
I came to this series because of it's bestseller status, although I'm not naturally a thriller reader. I stayed with the series because of Evan Smoak - a truly fascinating character. The guns and machines and intricate plotting are all excellent, but for me, it's Evan's internal battle to make sense of his past and how he strives to live in the present that keeps me reading.
Smoak is not homophobic, racist or sexist - which goes to show, you don't have to rely on the old Islamophobic or Russian mafia tropes featuring a macho jerk to write a compelling action thriller/spy story.
Highly recommended.

Orphan X delivers again
The Orphan X series seems to improve with each novel.
There are many threads within this one, many plates to keep spinning and Gregg Hurwitz pulls it off.
Can orphan x take down the president?
Can he overcome yet another orphan, hell-bent on killing him?
Can he retain some kind of normal relationship with Mia and Peter?
Can he still do his "day job" - helping folk in hopeless situations?
And what is 1997 all about?
Once again Scott Brick's narration is excellent, keeping us hooked into the storylines.
Can't wait for the next one!
