Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Out of the Dark by Gregg Hurwitz.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from the orphanage he called home and inducted into a top secret Cold War programme. Trained as a lethal weapon, he and his fellow recruits were sent round the world to do the government's dirty work.

But the programme was rotten to the core. And now the man responsible needs things to be nice and clean. All evidence must be destroyed. That includes Evan.

To survive, Evan's going to have to take the fight to his nemesis. There's just one problem with that. Jonathan Bennett is President of the United States, and Evan isn't his only victim.

To save himself - and the country - Evan is going to have to figure out how to kill the most well-protected man on the planet....

I could listen to the narrator read the phone book. He really brings the story to life. I loved the story and found myself laughing out loud in some parts.
The mix me humour and action is great.

Outstanding!

If you like your Jason bourne style ex assassin with a heart style you will love Evan Smoak. To compare hin to Jason though is unfair as he is way more complex way more brutal but goodness there is so much emotion in these books. Who would of thought you could tear up listening to this type of book. I can only finish by saying Mr Hurwitz is nothing short of genius putting other authors of this genre in the shade . Buy the first book in the series and by the time you reach this one you’ll be desperate for number five.. which actually is out early next year ! Please keep Evan going is all I can say!

Nearly spoiled by the narration

Love the series but the narration let it down. The Nowhere Man’s voice and emotion just didn’t come over well. He sounded like he was about to burst into tears. It got a lot better nearer the end. It didn’t stop me listening.

I can listen no longer!

This narrator makes it impossible to continue to listen. He is such a drama queen that I cannot concentrate on WHAT he is saying, only on HOW he is saying it! Life is too short for this nonsense.

My least favourite of the series, but still great.

This is my least favourite of the Orphan X series, but still a great entry. It takes roughly 3.5 hours for Evan to become the protagonist and prior to this, ardent readers will be subjected to the same exposition meant for newcomers to the series. I understand why, but it’s just a needless rehash for us fans. At time’s it elevates Evan to almost mystical proportions, having him disappear in a blink etc and never really gives you the sense he’s in any real danger, unlike previous entry’s. If anything, this would have been a good time to wrap up the story threads, but I’ve just pre ordered the next one that comes out in a couple of weeks, so I guess there’s much more to come. A great book, if not in the same ‘intense’ fashion of the earlier ones.

Good performance of a non-stop action story.

His clear diction and discernable characters make Scott Brick one of the most prolific narrators in America. Once again he has performed the book in an entertaining and well paced manner.

By now we have got to know what to expect from Evan Smoak. It is all there. As usual there is some suspension of belief as our hero evades hundreds of police and secret service agents. His thoughts seem to work twice as fast as humanly possible. But set this over competence aside and you get a well paced action thriller.

The supporting characters are well written. Hurwitz clearly does his research into mental incapacity as well as the expected investigation into how the President is guarded.

All round a decent book

Excellent Thriller

I really enjoyed this, the fourth in the Orphan X series. It has great characters, a tantalising plot and plenty of thrilling action. I feel that there is more light and shade in Evan Smoak than there is in Jack Reacher; he actually has some real, though difficult, relationships which allows for the development of characters between and within the novels. Evan Smoak is also reflective and thoughtful in his actions. Obviously he is an indestructible killing machine and racks up a colossal body count but this is an action thriller, not Jane Austin, and few writers can deliver such mayhem as pleasurably as Gregg Hurwitz.

A little disappointed

This fourth book didn't have the same excitement for me as the other three. It was much more political, which I didn't like; and it didn't have as much emphasis on the "Do you need my help?" storyline.

I still enjoyed it, but was a little disappointed.

Love this author

This guy writes so well I feel like I am there. I can't recommend him enough. It's a romance, a thriller, an adventure do-gooding rescuer hero with plenty of realistic flaws. Just my kind of listen. Bought the book too.

Orphan X at his best.

I really enjoy the Orphan X series. The last book was disappointing but back on track with this one. Narration is so important to the success of an audiobook and Scott Brick is amazing. Now waiting for the next in the series.
