John le Carré
Brought to you by Penguin.
Le Carré's post-Cold War masterpiece, filled with suspense, betrayal, desire and drama
The Cold War is over and retired secret servant Tim Cranmer has been put out to pasture, spending his days making wine on his Somerset estate. But then he discovers that his former double agent Larry - dreamer, dissolute, philanderer and disloyal friend - has vanished, along with Tim's mistress. As their trail takes him to the lawless wilds of Russia and the North Caucasus, he is forced to question everything he stood for.
Set in a fragmented, uncertain post-Soviet world, le Carré's brutal story of falsehoods and betrayal shows men playing dangerous games beyond their control.
Michael Jayston’s narration simply astoundingly good!!

So much detail, is it all actually needed?

It’s like being stuck at a dinner party next to an insufferable bore who alternates between talking to you about his ex and lecturing the whole table with his politics whilst virtue signalling with his shiny moral compass.
Of the 3 central characters, 2 of them are almost entirely represented via recalled conversations. The scenes of reported dialogue are separated by long sections of turgid exposition. There’s an early police interview scene where he almost provokes the sergeant into punching him in the face. This stayed with me as I spent most of the book wishing he had.
Turgid and painfully slow

The plot is too simple to justify the length of the text and full of silly dialogue, for instance, "...they've gone to the rave," and "'Cheers' is how the working class say, 'Thank you,' these days," or similar.
Jayston's peerless as a narrator especially of le Carre, that's why I finished it.
Stayed for Jayston

Disappointing and quite boring.
