Critic reviews

"Richly satisfying and told with remarkable flair, it confirms Mark as one of the darkest of the new faces in British crime writing, and not one to miss" ( Daily Mail)

terrible narration gaffes

This is a good book ruined for anyone living in yorkshire where the story is based. The glaring and constant mispronunciation of several local place names is jarring. Why on earth pronounce Anlaby as Anlaybe over and over again. More research needed next time please Toby

Narrator needs to hear a Hull accent and to check place names

Great story that held my attention throughout and well narrated, for the most part, but oh I wish the narrator had been told that Anlaby has a short a in the middle (as in cat) not a long one ( as in baby).

Still unconvinced by McAvoy

I wasn't a great fan of the first book in the series but appreciated the author's hard work enough to try the second. For a lot of the "Original Skin" I felt unconvinced, it just didn't seem as enthralling or well rounded as other detective series I really enjoyed such as PC Grant and Stuart McBride's but I stuck with it. I was rewarded by a spreading sense that maybe this series could progress as I found myself actually caring what happened to the cast of characters and rushed through the last half dozen chapters anxious to get the final twist
It'll be enough to draw me back for the third book, let's hope this improvement continues

DS Aector McAvoy -Book 2

Hull-based DS Aector McAvoy is an outsider in his workplace because he had previously unearthed corruption in the force. He still wants to do the right thing.

Suzie Devlin is an outsider who is into 'an alternative scene'. Her best friend is brutally killed and she is now in the killers sights.

McAvoy is determined to protect Suzie. even if it means danger for him....

Great story and super narrative by Toby Longworth.

I love this series

I find myself fascinated by the characters in these books. McAvoy is a slightly confusing jumble of intense determination and incongruous shyness. His relationship with his boss is interesting and unusual with an undercurrent of something sexual.
The plot kept me guessing and a great twist at the end.
The narrator does a really good job of bringing the characters to life , I enjoyed listening to his variation of tones and accents.
I am about to download the third book !

Better than the first book

I would still like a little more pace, but overall I am enjoying this series. The characters are very good and the storylines mesh well.
As remarked on by another reviewer, PLEASE get the pronunciation right! How can Wincolmlee be said correctly, but not Anlaby? It's An-lu-bee, not An-lay-bee. It got very irritating.
Well rounded characters, unusual plot lines and a tidy ending. Not enough to set my world on fire, but still enjoyable.
One last thing that's annoyed me about the narration - though overall, it is good - quite a few times there is practically no pause between paragraphs and you jump from one scene/storyline to the next without pause. If you're not paying attention, it can be a little confusing!

New favorite

Crime has been my thing since I started to read books at about 10yo, and this is the perfect companion when needing to get out of your head for a while or some company doing chores. I fell over this series by lucky accident and I'm grateful. Usually I reed my books but occasionally it's great to have your hands free to do other stuff, and here we are. This is book nr 2 in this series and I'm starting book 3 as soon as this review is done. It's light, funny, descriptional and interesting. I see my self as picky about crime and its too easy to grasp the plot, this book took me to the last 10 chapters before I figured it out. I love (H) Aector and his rosy onloock at what the world should be, how his wife is his opposite and at the same time preserve his vision of what he wants for his family. I love the humor and banter between all the colleagues and how when you think that bad ones are really bad, they does something nice. This is "normal" people, whatever that means, and we can see ourselves and the reality in these stories. Been a fan of Allison Brennan for over 20 years, and this author gives me the same smile, mystery and "time off" as her.....and that's a compliment!

Very easy and enjoyable

The perfect story to while away time. Absorbing, but not taxing. Hours flew without me noticing. This is the second of Mark's books I've had on audible. I continue to enjoy the characters- particularly with Longworth as the narrator.
