Summary
A new original series from Netflix
"Not just a tale of prisons, drugs, crime, or justice; it is, simply put, a beautifully told story about how incredible women can be" (Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love.)
With her career, live-in boyfriend and loving family, Piper Kerman barely resembles the rebellious young woman who got mixed up with drug runners and delivered a suitcase of drug money to Europe over a decade ago. But when she least expects it, her reckless past catches up with her; convicted and sentenced to fifteen months at an infamous women's prison in Connecticut, Piper becomes inmate #11187-424.
From her first strip search to her final release, she learns to navigate this strange world with its arbitrary rules and codes, its unpredictable, even dangerous relationships. She meets women from all walks of life, who surprise her with tokens of generosity, hard truths and simple acts of acceptance.
Now an original comedy-drama series from Netflix, Piper's story is a fascinating, heartbreaking and often hilarious insight into life on the inside.
Critic reviews
"A fantastic tale from the Siberia of America's war on drugs and a rippingly fun read right down to the unexpected moment of closure." ( Elle magazine USA)

loved it
Loved it from start to finish. This will be a book to remember. Funny and thought provokingingly sad at the same time.

A bit disappointing..
Not a lot really happens and at times the author comes off as a little superior.

Excellent but not as good as the TV show
Good narration, but different from the TV series, would highly recommend before watching. Slightly abrupt ending.

Better than the tv series.
Better than the tv series & that`s saying something because that`s brilliant. Took a while to put the faces to the different names as some characters have been changed to those on the tele, but gave a different more in depth spin to a great story.

Less drama, more detail
I really love the book. I got through it much quicker than I normally do with other books. If you've watched the tv series first, just know there's a lot less drama in the book, that isn't to say there is none but it's less brutal in the violent sort of way and more of an insight into real prison life. Only thing I would change if I could is a little bit of story of piper settling back into life once on the outside again, all in all though, the book is brilliant

The inspiration behind the series
If you're looking for a full and juicy novel version of the Netflix series then you might be disappointed - but it's really interesting to hear about the people who inspired some of the characters and events from the tv show.
