About this listen

Amy Carter is just 14 when she leaves school to look after her sick mother. But she is left all alone when her father is hanged for murder and her mother dies shortly after. Shunned even by her former friends, she is rescued by artist Benjamin Scott, who met Amy just once, read about the family's difficulties, and tracked her down. He takes the girl to his lodgings where Amy, with Ben, his fellow housemates, and his kindly landlady, finds a real home for the first time. When she falls in love with a young doctor and marries, Amy finds happiness beyond her wildest dreams - until the outbreak of war threatens to take away everything she holds dear.©2005 Beryl Matthews (P)2007 Soundings Historical Fiction

Another absolutely fantastic story. Such happiness and sadness, but a joy to listen too! Annie Aldington is the best for these stories. I hope she narrates more for the author.

A wonderful story.

A wonderful story beautifully depicting the struggles of London life in the Second World War. Romantic, heart-wrenching and uplifting and as always perfectly narrated by Annie Aldington

A really lovely read. You feel as if you know the characters and want to live in their world, which through this charming story, you do.

Had the makings of a really good story. Found it quite boring to be fair. Narrator was excellent as usual.
