Summary

One love. One motorcycle club. Two stepbrothers.

Ryder. Controlling. Ambitious. Protective.

Jed. Self-destructive. Trapped. Lonely.

Their love? Forbidden. Taboo. All-consuming.

For Jed, the Coffin Nails Motorcycle Club is family. With them, he learned how to think, what to enjoy, and how to fight, but there is one thing he knows his friends can’t find about. They would never accept him as gay, and so his life is a constant struggle with desires that fill him with despair. Only there is a much darker secret lurking in Jed’s heart. His feelings for his stepbrother, Ryder, go far beyond brotherly. Trapped with a yearning that can never be fulfilled, Jed spirals out of control and unwillingly puts the love of his life in danger.

Ryder is climbing up the ranks. Recently promoted to sergeant-at-arms, he has it all: Drive, respect, and the love of his biker family. When his stepbrother gets into trouble with the law, Ryder decides to take the blame and save him from a long sentence. Deep inside, he knows there is nothing he wouldn’t do for Jed, but through a desperate attempt to suppress his own hidden desires, he might irreversibly break the man he secretly loves.

But finding out what they feel for each other will test their loyalty to the Coffin Nails MC and change their lives forever.

Motorcycle club, stepbrothers, and forbidden love

I really enjoyed this audiobook and it’s depiction of the forbidden love that develops between two stepbrothers who were raised as brothers in a motorcycle club. Ryder is the responsible older brother who is willing to do anything to protect Jed. He has strange feelings for Jed, which he steadfastly pushes away. Jed is the younger brother, who was abandoned by his mother and also bears the burden of being gay in the homophobic MC world. He also has strong (sexual) feelings for Ryder. After a near tragedy, both men confess their feelings to the other, and they must decide how to navigate their future with each other and the motorcycle club. Can they keep their feelings secret? What will happen if the other Club members find out? Complicating life are Jed’s horrible, blackmailing girlfriend who has compromising pictures of Jed, an important drug deal in the works, and lazy Club members in need of a shake-up. I really liked that this audiobook/book presents a realistic picture of gay members and motorcycle clubs. In the end, they DON’T all accept, cozy-up, and sing kumbaya. Much hate, prejudice, and rejection remains, but Ryder and Jed find a way through it.

WARNING: This audiobook is realistic and gritty in it’s portrayal of club life, including morally ambiguous characters, attempted non-consensual sex, drug and alcohol use, drug running, theft, sexual promiscuity, toxic masculinity, and homophobia. There are also some instances of “club justice” (including beatings and arson).

The narration is excellent and well-portrays the rough bikers, while also softening up for the gentler exchanges and hot, sexy times between Jed and Ryder.

I received a free copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

A hard road to travel

Whew, talk about heavy on the angst! Jed and Ryder have such a struggle to be together. Jed knows deep down exactly what he wants, but he can't figure out how to make that happen. He is impulsive, so he makes a series of incredibly bad decisions that nearly ruin his life and the life of the one man he loves. Ryder also knows what he wants, but his love for the club and his inclination to be a people pleaser cause him to hide that desire. He is more mature and not impulsive like Jed so he does ok. Unfortunately, when Jed screws up Ryder steps in to fix things and that gesture of love almost costs both of them everything. These two guys have to work on themselves and find the courage to be honest with each other to get what they want and need. Wyatt Baker does a magnificent job here. You'll both root for Jed and Wyatt and occasionally want to bang their heads together and tell them to wake up. Due to Baker's ability to make them come alive, you'll probably be yelling your comments to the audiobook.

Brothers and lovers!

Jed and Ryder are stepbrothers. Same MC. But Jed is a bit wild and Ryder always comes to his rescue. It’s a hardship having a crush on a stepbrother who is straight. Specially with all the testosterone at the Club. I enjoyed Ryder’s tenderness when it comes to Jed, he is so protective and caring. Jed is a mess sometimes but Ryder centers him. The drama was real, the homophobia too. They had to go through a lot to be together. Very enjoyable dark romance.

Wonderfully chaotic with plenty of steamy romance

I've never found an author who can write gritty, motorcycle club chaos the way that K. A. Merikan can. I wasn't even sure if I liked the Coffin Nails MC and I still found myself sucked into the crazy ups and downs of their journey.

Though the romance was an achingly slow build in the first half of this audio, the neverending blackmail, betrayal, partying, and deal-making the Coffin Nails engaged in made this story feel like a nonstop rollercoaster ride. It was thrilling to listen to Jed angst over his years-long attraction to his stepbrother, even if sometimes I thought I was going to lose my mind waiting for him to make a move. The buildup of all those emotions was insanely overwhelming, and I can't imagine how hard it must have been for Jed to repress his desires for so long. If Jed's chapters were an open admission of his cravings, Ryder's were a much more puzzling picture. When this story started I was sure Jed's feelings were one-sided, but little details kept sneaking in to question my assumptions. There's no doubt that Ryder felt an intense need to protect his stepbrother, but it was fascinating to see his sexual attraction to him emerge as this story progressed.

With the two of them circling each other, angsting over their feelings, and trying to deal with the train wreck of their MC, it came as no surprise that Jed reached his breaking point. That heartpounding moment on the cliffs was a huge turning point for Ryder and Jed, and as much as it made me panic to see how desperate Jed was to ease his pain, I was also estatic to see the two of them take a chance on being honest with each other. What followed were some of the most incredibly erotic, secret hookups imaginable. Ryder and Jed didn't let anything dampen their passion when they were alone, and they explored and savored every sexual act together. Even more thrilling was knowing that their secret nights together weren't just a physical release--Jed and Ryder cared about each other, protected each other, and loved each other in a way that surpassed everything else. Even when the Coffin Nails took a nosedive so deep I wasn't sure they could recover, even when Dana reared her ugly head to threaten to expose their secrets, I never doubted that Jed and Ryder would fight to stay together. They may not have been able to count on the Coffin Nails to accept their sexuality, but they could always count on each other. Their journey didn't end with hearts and roses and running off into the sunset together, but it made me fiercely happy to see them find a way to keep their MC identity and a romantic relationship.

Loving the series

Another perfect shade of grey story by KA Merikan. Ryder and Jed have an unique story that kept me entranced throughout. Don’t know how KA Merikan get the perfect balance without copying stories, but all the stories are fresh. Wyatt Baker did an amazing job with the narration.

deliciously dark and taboo

I read this book when it first came out and loved it, so I jumped at the chance to revisit it in audio format. Ryder will do just about anything for his stepbrother, even a stint in jail. Jed has been keeping some big secrets, terrified that he will be kicked out of the club for being gay, not to mention the tiny detail that he has been in love with Ryder since they were teens. I loved this dark, taboo story

Tremendous Story! Fabulous Performance by W. Baker

I always enjoy K.A. Merikan's novels, the depth of their characters and the complexity of the arc in their stories is definitely a treat. One Step Too Close delves deeply into both Jed and Ryder's actions, motivations, and reactions, and follows them through quite a journey!

While the Merikan's stories are never predictable, I literally had no idea how not only Jed and Ryder, but the whole MC, were going to get through this one. Edge of my seat, fantastic!

Wyatt Baker delivers a spectacular performance in the audio version of One Step Too Close. He always comes up with the best voices for his characters, and he's outdone himself here. He's perfected the perfect youthful hooligan scallywag for Jed, and the rough, emotional tones he brings out of Ryder adds so much to his personality. Mr. Baker also paces this one wonderfully well. The intensity builds, reaches a crescendo, builds some more, until I couldn't tell which end was up... and it was amazing! A tremendous episode of this series.

A Forbidden Love

MM, MC romance. 6th book in the series but a standalone listen/read. Ryder and Jed are stepbrothers and have been brought up within the MC they are now members of. So much has been unsaid over the years but now the secrets out and everything has changed. Really enjoyed their story that Wyatt Baker brought to life with his narrating skills.

Intense and Gripping

One Step Too Close is the sixth book in the Sex and Mayhem series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. The entire Sex and Mayhem series is wonderful, and I highly suggest reading all of them just because they are so darn good. However, this book is not for everyone – it’s dark and gritty with morally grey characters who don’t hold back on violence.

I LOVED this book. Usually I’m not a huge fan of forbidden love, but Jed and Ryder are such fascinating characters that I was utterly sucked into their relationship and immediately invested in their happiness. The plot was fresh and through me for a few loops – I was not expecting some of the outcomes and loved that K.A. Merikan can still surprise me. The audiobook was also well done—Wyatt Baker does a fantastic job narrating the book and really brings out the intensity of their personalities and relationship. The audiobook production was also well done and paired with the fantastic story it made for a wonderful experience.

Steamy 🔥

This was a steamy and sexy step brother's romance

Wyatt Baker's voice had just the right amount of roughness that gave the characters more personality

The characters were complex and scorched the sheets!

This is definitely my favorite book in the series

Jed and Ryder

Jed is gay and in love with his "step-brother" Ryder. He's in fake relationship with Dana, who has blackmailed him with a video of him with another man and wants him to spy on the club. Ryder is bisexual and, in the closet, is in a relationship with Jess and is Sargent at arms for his club. He is smart, responsible and takes care of everyone. Jed comes out and he confesses everything, the blackmail, his sexuality and his love for Ryder. Ryder's reaction was simple, he kisses Jed the man he loves. I loved Jed and Ryder together their passion and interaction was amazing. I received an ARC of this audio for my honest review.

Long awaited audio—definitely worth the wait

I love this kind of story, step brothers-bi awakening and finding each other. There are definitely ups and downs and sooooo much happening in this story and their Chapter. I do have to say Wyatt baker is magic and that I adore these two. I highly recommend however you should read possible trigger warnings.

Semi taboo MM step brother MC romance

KA Merikan did it again with the MM romance. Places in the background of homophobic MC environment, the two main characters who are step brothers struggle to fight their attraction to each other, then once they are together, struggle to share it with their family and friends. The character development was very good and the narration and was great.

An Awesome MC Romance from KA Merikan

Once again KA Merikan delivers an outstanding motorcycle club romance. ‘One Step Too Close’ takes us to the Louisiana chapter of the Coffin Nails MC where we experience the brilliantly written story of step-brothers and fellow MC brothers-in-arms Jed and Ryder.

What brings me back to Merikan’s stories time and again are the wonderfully real characters they create. Jed and Ryder have grown up in the MC culture of toxic masculinity and homophobia, yet are capable of intimate love with each other. These men go through crises of self-loathing and self-identity to come out stronger together. It’s a gorgeous love story from beginning to end.

Ryder and Jed are step-brothers--some would call it taboo love. For me, as long as there’s no power imbalance, emotional manipulation, or coercion going on, I’m OK with sibling--pseudo or real--incest. Jed and Ryder are 100% consenting adults when their relationship starts. The club violence gets a little intense toward the end, but I don’t think it’s worse than mafia/MC/zombie violence depicted on a cable-TV program.

Merikan expertly writes beautifully emotional love-making scenes.

Wyatt Baker’s performances have grown on me over the course of the several books I’ve listened to him narrate. I’ve come to recognize how truly suited his voice is to Merikan’s stories and look forward to many more.

This audiobook was given to me, by my request, as a free review copy. I am now voluntarily submitting this opinion of ‘One Step Too Close’.

Highly recommended.

Great story from a new to me author

M/M
Motorcycle Club
Tabboo(ish) they are step brothers

Warning: homophobia, drug use and other illegal activities (car theft, weapons, arson) and a suicide attempt.

I was given a free audio copy from the author and the GRR arc team for review.

The narrator did a good job. He had a pleasant reading voice and kept a good pace (though mine is set at 1.40x). He was age appropriate considering it said Jedd was 25. He expressed the emotions well. He altered his voice a little every chapter to show the changing POVs and for the other characters but I have heard better from other narrators so I'd rate this narration 4 stars.

This is book 6 in the series but can be read as a standalone. I have not read the previous books and didn't feel like I missed any vital information. This was also my first time reading this author.

This one is 13.5 hours divided into 2 parts. Despite it being on the longish side there were no draggy parts and the story kept my interest the entire time. I couldn't stop listening. This was labeled dark romance and I didn't really get that vibe other then them belonging to a MC that occasionally did some illegal and morally shady things.

The 2 step brothers both harbor secret feelings for each other but both are outwardly straight with girlfriends. There's no cheating though. Once they finally confess their feelings they must hide their secret love from their biker family.

I really enjoyed this story. The characters were great and had great chemistry. It was pretty low angst and lots of steamy scenes. As well as some plot drama to keep things interesting. I would definitely recommend this book.

tantalizing

KA Merikan's One Step Too Close - Coffin Nails Mc Louisiana  is the 6th book in the Sex&Mayhem series.  Taboo, forbidden, dark, violent, suspenseful, heated... and with a lot of drama.  Trying intriguing storytelling and interesting characters.
Wyatt Baker narrates the story wonderfully and adds even greater entertainment value to the already great story.  Fantastic!

Expect the Unexpected

I feel like I say the same thing when KA Merikan and Wyatt Baker collaborate on a audio book, which is that the performance and story are excellent. I Liked It

I enjoyed listening to this installment in the Sex & Mayhem series. I am a huge fan of the authors and like their storytelling style with dark twists and the edge. One Step Too Close is a bit more realistic than usual for romance stories. The relationship between Ryder and Jed was hot and intense, reactions by their MC brothers to Jed's sexuality was very real life like. I enjoyed following romance grow between Jed and Ryder and how it helped Jed heal from the pain and inspired Ryder's character development. Narrator did a good job with character's voices and the story, his voice was a perfect fit with the mood of the book and personalities of main characters. Overall this was a good listening experience.
