Summary

When San Francisco Homicide Inspector Rebecca Mayfield arrives at the scene of a deadly shooting, she's shocked to find that the witnesses have caught the killer, and that he's someone she knows. Rebecca's a by-the-book detective, and she's always done her job according to the rules, without hesitation, until Richie Amalfi comes back into her life.

Richie knows his way around everything and everyone in his city. When people say they "know a guy who knows a guy," Richie's the guy they're talking about. He can usually help people out of tight situations, but suddenly finds he can't get himself out of hot water when he's accused of murder.

Richie's on the run, and he runs straight to Rebecca to help him prove his innocence. From the nightclubs of North Beach to the scenic heights of Twin Peaks, dangers lurk and more deaths happen. As Rebecca discovers there's a lot more to Richie than she thought, and a lot more to like than she imagined, she soon fears not only for her life, but also her heart.

"I didn't know it was safe to stand up."

Any additional comments?

Rebecca Mayfield is one of those sticklers for the rules, by the book type cop - until a charming murder suspect turns up on her doorstep, declaring his innocence and asking for her help. Does she turn him in? No, she invites him in (to her house), falls asleep - and wakes up handcuffed to him. So, police procedural it is not. Good fun, most definitely. Lots of banter between Inspector Mayfield and her cheeky suspect, Ritchie. A host of colourful characters and a decent mystery.
Kristi Burns' narration was a pleasure to hear, well paced and with perfect intonation. She became the voice of headstrong, but slightly confused, Rebecca Mayfield and, although not able to give a believable male resonance, still carried the illusion during conversation.

This is a good listen, easy on the ear, lighthearted in approach, all wrapped up in a decent murder mystery. If you are looking for gritty reality, this is not the book for you. But for well written amusing situations, Italian food and a little gentle flirtation, this is great.
My thanks to the right's holder for the gift this book, via Audiobook Boom. It was very enjoyable, a good start to a new series

Good cop bad crush..

The narration was very good and totally on the money. I don't normally go for this type of story.. but I may just have to listen to the next book to makeup my mind. 🙂😉

Good story with rushed narration

Use to drive me crazy when you get the long pauses between the end of one chapter and the start of another. This narration had the opposite issue- barely a breathe between 2 scenes and you do a mental hiccup before you realize that the story has moved on. Otherwise - enjoyable.

Good for the price

law-enforcement, murder-investigation

Quick and somewhat unusual for a whodunit. I liked it, but I'm not suitably motivated to read more of the series.

cozy mystery

If you could sum up One O'Clock Hustle in three words, what would they be?

Funny, cute,

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, always wondered how Richie was going to get out of being accused of murder when there were witnesses.

Have you listened to any of Kristi Burns’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I haven't.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I thought it was great when Homicide Inspector Rebecca and RichieAmalfie were handcuffed together.

Any additional comments?

We need to read the second book in the series to find out if Rebecca and Richie ever become a couple.
I received this audio book for free for an honest review.

Enjoyed the story line and some comedic characters. Wished for more enthusiasm in the narrator.

A homicide procedural with a hint of romance

What engaged me in this story: *Richie of questionable character, and Rebecca a homicide inspector were characters you wanted to know more about. *The banter between Rebecca and Richie made for lots of laughs. *The story grabbed your interest quickly with the homicide scene. This was mostly a clean read. No sex. but some minor swear words used. I wished the author had made this a cleaner read.

One o'clock Hustle.

I enjoyed the story and characters were fun, relatable. Narrator was o.k., some of the accents were off and felt kinda forced. I'll look forward to reading the next one.

A homicide detective tries to free a friend

Rebecca Mayfield, the sole female homicide detective in San Francisco, arrives exhausted at a murder scene, pleased to learn that eye witnesses have captured the murderer until she learns that the captured man is her friend Richie Amalfi in One O'Clock Hustle by Joanne Pence. Finding it hard to believe that Richie could have committed murder, despite the fact that he is rumored to be "connected," Rebecca seeks to question him, only to have him lawyer up. Then, arriving home later, Rebecca is astonished to find Richie there. He has escaped from the police and has turned to Rebecca to help him prove his innocence. Against her better judgment, Rebecca decides against turning him in and works together with Richie to try to get to the bottom of the crime.

This book is a lot of fun. The plot is creative, and the characters of Rebecca and Richie interesting. I liked the development of the romantic tension between the pair.

Kristi Burns does a good job performing the audio edition of this book. She creates good voices for the characters and good accents as well. I felt that she was an excellent choice for narrator.

I really had a good time listening to One O'Clock Hustle. The book has a creative story and interesting characters. I look forward to listening to the next book in the series! I give this five stars.

Dusappointing

I couldn't finish the book. The female police inspector is stupidly emotional. The story is frustrating as she makes bad choices again and again all the while telling to herself how she normally is so intelligent and rational. It's like when you watch a movie and you want to slap the people who do the obviously stupid things.
