Editor reviews

Young narrator Ryan Sparkes' performance is genuine and heartfelt, it feels as though he's telling his own life story, so fully immersed is he in the character of 11-year-old Norm, who loses his left hand in an accident. Supported by the stirring performances of a full cast, Sparkes traces the challenges Norm faces - from the bullying at school to his attempt to continue playing baseball on the school team. Set in postwar America, this heartwarming story is based on the real experiences of the author's husband, and the inspiring interview with the couple will have listeners ending this audiobook with uplifted feelings.

This is a happy and warm true story about eleven year old Norm who loses his hand.

The tale is uplifting and in large part true, recounting events from the authour's husband's own childhood. Amusing and nostalgic for adults, thought provoking and empathy inducing for younger readers this story has a bit of everything, including a few tearful moments and a lot of joy.

Full Cast Audio do their customary lively interpretation, successfully as always, and the main part of Norm read by Ryan Sparks is a real star performance. The short chat with MJ Auch and her husband Herm is a nice bonus on the end.

A real feel good read and one that, were my own children still around the 12 year old mark, I would enjoy reading with them.

Great reading of a touching tale
