One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This is an urgent and necessary reckoning about what it means to live in the West today. As an immigrant, Omar El Akkad believed the West offered freedom and justice for all. Over the past twenty years he reported on the various Wars on Terror, Ferguson, climate change, Black Lives Matter protests, and more. He won awards for his journalism and his fiction. But now, watching the unmitigated slaughter in Gaza, he comes to the conclusion that much of what the West promises is a lie.

This powerful book is a chronicle of Omar's painful realisation, a moral grappling with what it means – as a citizen, as a father – to carve out some sense of possibility during these devastating times. This is a book for those that have tired of moral emptiness. This is a book for everyone who wants something better.

Critic reviews

"This is an angry book, but its anger is controlled. Forensic and reasoned. Rather than impotently wonder how the situation in Gaza has been allowed to happen, El Akkad sees it as the logical endpoint of the neoliberal pursuit of profit and growth above all else . . . One Day remains much more relevant than [El-Akkad] would want it to be" (CHRIS POWER)
"It is difficult to understand the nature of a true rupture while it is still tearing through the fabric of our world. Yet that is precisely what Omar El Akkad has accomplished, putting broken heart and shredded illusions into words with tremendous insight, skill and courage. A unique and urgently needed book" (NAOMI KLEIN)
"One Day is passionate, poetic and sickening. It is full of well-earned rage, frustration with those who need this morality to be spelled out" (DINA NAYERI)
"Urgent, essential, and profound. A lightning bolt - sets fire to our comforting lies, and illuminates a way forwards" (RIZ AHMED)
"A startling, shocking, beautiful and essential book" (BRIAN ENO)
"Part elegy, part rallying cry, this magnificent book should, and will, be required reading for future generations trying to reckon with one of humanity’s darkest chapters" (TÉA OBREHT)
"If you cannot fathom the scale and savagery of the genocide against the Palestinian people, if you feel the world is smashed off its axis and you fell profoundly alone, profoundly alone, profoundly mad, then read this clear, elegant and devastatingly truthful account of why you are not mad, and not alone; read this shatteringly honest book by a great writer who also cannot reconcile those things, but is - on behalf of us all, and with his whole soul - trying" (MAX PORTER)
"One Day is passionate, poetic and sickening. It is full of well-earned rage, frustration with those who need this morality to be spelled out . . . It is an important book, a must-read, if only for the reminder that history always comes down to one simple question: “When it mattered, who sided with justice and who sided with power?"" (DINA NAYERI)
"I am quite sure now that I will never be the same person again . . . May we all live long, but this book should be in our will and testament, so our children and our children’s children receive the pen of Omar El Akkad. To read a book that perfectly extracts the feelings I have been having is a gift I never thought I would receive. This book has changed my life. It is a book of hope – because it shows us that damning testament of our past, but also a blueprint for the future. Read this book" (MISAN HARRIMAN)

Beautifully written; beautifully read. If only the whole world would listen. You have opened a window in my heart and allowed out the pain. Thank you.

Memorable - a call to ethical action through self reflection and a highly attuned and subtle “listening “ to the liberal apology for the Gaza genocide and inaction on the climate crisis. The kind of book that makes you want to keep notes and hold onto the metaphors to sustain oneself. A beautiful book - read by the author with passionate fluency.

Thank you to Omar El Akkqd for not just naming the massacre of children what it is. Genocide. Thank you for doing such so clearly and eloquently. Thank you for reminding us all, for reminding me, to never stop reaching for a more moral world...even when I despair, tire, grow frustrated or worse scared to lose something.

Important to call out the West for what it is: abject, amoral and racist and those who turn the other cheek.

Powerful and moving.

I dislike the fact that there is such evil on earth that this book had to written, but the book itself is heartbreaking, written with such finesse and insight. Read by the author lends another level of empathy. Wish everyone could read/ listen to this!

Heartbreaking and challenging!
