Summary

Remembering the dead will always give them life.

The coveted Morrígan’s staff is up for sale on the black market to the highest bidder, and SOA Special Agent Patrick Collins will do whatever it takes to ensure the Dominion Sect doesn’t get their hands on it. Returning the weapon to its rightful owner is another step on the long road toward clearing Patrick’s soul debt, but he won’t walk it alone. Jonothon de Vere won’t let him.

Obeying the gods means Patrick must travel to London. For Jono, it means facing a past he thought he’d left behind forever. His return to England isn’t welcome, and neither is their pack, but Jono and Patrick will face the antagonism together. Politics aside, their priority must be the mission, but the bone-chilling secret they uncover in the London god pack will have far-reaching repercussions no one can ignore.

A race against time takes Patrick and Jono from the streets of London to the bright lights of Paris, where hospitality is thin on the ground, the air is filled with whispered prayers for the missing, and the Morrígan’s staff will end up in the one place it should never have gone - a graveyard.

For beneath Paris lie the long-forgotten dead, and when they rise to walk again, the living can only hope to die.

On the Wings of War is a m/m urban fantasy with a gay romantic subplot and a HFN ending. It is a direct sequel to A Vigil in the Mourning. Listening to the first book in the series would be helpful in enjoying this one.

An Incredible Installment in the Series

On the Wings of War is the fifth book in the Soulbound series, and one I’ve been waiting for with bated breath. Wings of War cannot be read on its own and the entire series must be read in order to fully understand what’s going on. On the Wings of War was an incredible book and an exciting installment in the Soulbound series. I was left on the edge of my seat as the plot kept building and building until the magnificent climax that engulfed the entire city of Paris in an epic battle. The book ended on a cliffhanger, but it wasn’t a biting-your-nails cliffhanger, but an unexpected twist that had me gasping out loud. The characters were wonderful with a lot of tender moments between Patrick and Jono and a lot of fun and entertaining banter between all the characters. I cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out. The audiobook was narrated by Gary Furlong who does a fantastic job. Gary voices all the characters wonderfully and has kept their voices consistent throughout the series. I had no trouble at all following along with audiobook and was able to keep all the characters distinct. The audiobook performance was spectacular and the overall production was well done. This all culminated in an extremely enjoyable listening experience.

Good book, not my norm but I enjoyed it.

Not my norm, but really got into it. The narrator Gary Furlong was incredible, this was my first book narrated by him, but it won't be my last. Great with accents and different voices. I could completely follow quite a complex book. Everything you could want from a series!

This series is EVERYTHING. First off, the relationship. Jono and Patrick are just so solid and full of love, even if Patrick can’t say it. You can definitely feel it here in the way they look to one another, lean on each other, and just generally love with all they have. They’re definitely slotting in as one of my favorite book couples. The pack dynamics are amazing too. Sage and Wade are such a part of this family and this book would be nothing without them. (I dare you to say Wade isn’t your favorite character, you are a liar!) Then, of course, the main event, the incredible world building that Turner somehow tops in each installment. You have multiple pack politics, magical policing politics, foreign politics, the greater magical world, and so many different mythologies that you would think it wouldn’t work, but Turner seamlessly blends it all together and no storyline is lacking. This installment was full of action, had a good dash of humor (WADE ❤️ and also Spencer), has so many twists and turns (that last big reveal!). It seriously had everything you could want in a book and just further proved why this series is one of my favorites.

so freaking good!

I'm absolutely invested in this series and already looking forward to book 6. HT's world building is great! well, its real places, but with her supernatural spin thrown in too. I like that the heat factor isn't too much too, the plot is substantial enough. Gary's narration is on point too, as usual with his work. he's the perfect match for this series. A++ all round. ♡

Absolutely Fantastic!

This 5th book in the Soulbound series is absolutely fantastic. Patrick and Jono have finally become a seamlessly matched pair. No more going off without consulting the other, no more going it alone, and it's awesome. The book is full of action, tension, and suspense, with new challenges, new conflict, new enemies, and old friends. The gods are still sticking their noses in, but most of the conflict comes from other supernaturals - demons, mages, necromancers, shifters, zombies - and just plain, power-hungry humans. Some of the scenes will make you go ick, as the trail of destruction and death that always follows Patrick and his allies extends it's reach to London and Paris. It's a nonstop thrill-ride, but there are also some great sexy times between Patrick and Jono, and Wade continues to provide comic relief with his insatiable appetite and love of sweets. I love this series, and I will be eagerly and impatiently waiting for the next book. Ms. Turner can't write them fast enough. Gary Furlong's narration is always spectacular. I don't know how he manages to say all those foreign and complex names and words without stumbling. His narration is smooth and natural-sounding. I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Best yet!

This one has such great pacing and seemless action - do you need more of a sell than: Zombie Invasion and absurd amounts of property damage? Furlong did an exceptional job too with attention to details (making Patrick have less accurate French pronunciation than Jono for example.) If you've followed the series this far, you'll love this one!

Another amazing book

I love Patrick and Jono! Hailey Turner is a master at writing characters you fall in love with. These guys have been through so much and their fight isn't over yet! I also adore Gary Furlong's depiction of the characters. His rendition of Wade always makes me laugh, bringing humor in the middle of even serious moments. Amazing as always!

Soulbound has me Spellbound 💜

On the Wings of War: Soulbound Book #5 MMy Thoughts and Review: The adventures Turner takes the reader on this series never cease to astound and fascinate me. Still, on the hunt for an artifact belonging to the Morrigan, Patrick and Jono’s pack must travel to London where Jonathan will face off with a few demons from his past as well as a few new ones. The hunt for the Morrigan staff doesn’t end in London, but takes the team to Paris, where the dead from the catacombs walk the earth again, the team meet up with an old friend from Patrick’s Cairo days, and Wade falls in love with French pastries. I adore Gary Furlong’s narration of all the characters in this series, most especially Wade and Hermes. I think Furlong does an amazing job bringing all the characters to life and since I began listening to audiobooks this is in my top three faves of all time. I love everything about it from the action, the mythology, fantasy, the horror, the suspense, the steaMMy scenes between Jono and Patrick, and the humor. Most of all I love all that Jono’s god-pack is a pack of misfits, a found family that honor, love, and respect each other. They each make me happy and I am completely “Soulbound” to them. 🥰 Sharonica Logic: 5.00 soul-magic-stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I received a complimentary audio copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews to read and review. 🎧🌈🎧

PATRICK AND JONO BACK AGAIN!

After reading and listening to the first book in this series there was no way I was going to miss any additional books! So . . . I have purchased and listened to books 1 through 5 so far and have enjoyed all of them. Some of the reviewers have not cared much for the narrator . . . I found that he is perfect for this series! This entire series will be a re-listen for me. I highly recommend!

Godheads, Gore and Zombies

Story: 4.75⭐️ Narration: 4.75⭐️ Three months after the appearance of Yggdrasil in Chicago during Ethan’s last attempt at godhood, Patrick is under intense scrutiny and pressure. With goodwill within the SOA and the government running low and suspicions about Patrick’s true allegiances running high, the tightrope Patrick walks between doing the government’s bidding and that of the gods is slowly turning into an ever-tightening noose around his neck. Suggesting the government solicit aid from Lucien in order to gain entrée to the auction where the Morrígan’s staff will be sold does him no favors either. If that wasn’t enough of a headache, Patrick also has to juggle pack politics, while keeping his leadership of a God pack hidden from the watchful eyes of the UK’s equivalent to the SOA when he and the pack go to London (where Jono’s return is punishable by death). And since nothing for Patrick or Jono is ever easy, negotiations for Jono’s exile and their pack’s pass-through rights with the London God pack come with a decidedly deadly and unexpected danger that will entangle them in the London God pack’s turbulent troubles, complicate Patrick’s case even further and contribute to the staff ending up in “the one place it should never have gone.” There are not enough words for me to describe how much I love this series, and almost every book is better than the one before in one way or another. For On the Wings of War, the deft way Turner slowly ratchets up the tension and stakes of, not only the external events and machinations of the authorities Patrick is beholden to, but the tension within Patrick as well—his weariness, his heartbreak, and his bitter acceptance that these fights will probably cost his life—is gratifying. Patrick’s underlying despair and increasing need of Jono’s unconditional, freely given love and support is conveyed with subtle effectiveness amidst the mind-melting amount of action and political discord. I also enjoyed seeing Jono get closure on his past, as this was basically his only sore spot. Jono’s confidence, protectiveness and natural ability as a leader have been well established, but giving him the opportunity to return to his birth country and know for sure he’s found his real home grants him a freedom he didn’t realize he needed. In addition, I LOVED getting to see Sage shine as their Dire. While Sage has been a steadying and integral guiding hand in their pack, she is TRULY in her element in this book, as the full range of her responsibilities, skills and importance to their pack is on full display. If I hadn’t already been worshiping at the feet of Sage Beacroft, I totally would be after this book! The awesome Nadine is back as well, and we finally get to meet Spencer and his psychopomp, Fatima, both of whom quickly stole into my heart. Wade is still Wade—consuming all the pack tithes with his bottomless stomach, just with new snack options; however, he is also coming into his own. Moreover, he seems less snarky with Patrick than in the previous book. There is a moment between him and Patrick where I actually felt their mutual affection for one another in a way that I could only infer on Wade’s part before since he seemed to only show his softer side with Jono. It really underscored 1) how alone and valued as only a weapon and not a person Patrick grew up feeling with Setsuna, 2) how much Patrick wants and tries to protect Wade despite his powers as opposed to simply using him like a tool and 3) that Wade does actually appreciate this fact about Patrick, even though Patrick’s protectiveness and concern isn’t displayed the same way as Jono’s. It’s amazing how many feels, fun and growth Turner manages to insert into a story that is filled with intrigue, action, gore galore and lore…OMG, all the lovely, wonderful and far-spanning lore that Turner weaves so skillfully and effortlessly into the narrative to maximum effect. I love how each book introduces some lesser known/more obscure mythological figures to mix with the more familiar ones, and not just to randomly name drop them but to make them integral and purposeful to the story. I didn’t think any other installment in the series could compete with my favorite (Book 3, A Crown of Iron & Silver) in regards to top-notch action and emotional development, but the emotional and psychological strain Patrick is under, the almost literally soul-destroying lengths he has to go to to pay his soul debt and the ending…Let’s just say that with everything that happens in this leg of Patrick, Jono and the pack’s journey, I don’t know how Patrick (or the readers) will survive two more books after "On the Wings of War".

Story telling at its best

On the wings of war picks up from where a vigile in the morning leaves off and after decimating a couple of land marks the Special Agent Patrick Collins is chasing down his first true lead on the Morrigan Staff. Having to travel across the pond means Jono comes face to face with his past and Wade finds yet another snack he can't live without. Alliances and friends help the true New York City God Pack as they race against fate and the Dominion Sect to stop dark magic from destroying the city of Lights. Hailey Turner does it again with continuing with this page turning series. Her writing fresh, funny, and so descriptive that you can taste the Jaffa Cakes. The amazing way she details gods and demons across several mythologies seamlessly will have you wondering if she is a god herself... The narrator Gary Furlong is the best as his accents leave you wondering if you can call everyone "bruv" . Don't wait join or continue your adventure today! I can't wait for book 6!
