Summary

To win the war one man must break the rules of war. Because in the fight against the ruthless Sa’Nerran Empire there is only victory or death.

The Sa’Nerra were close to defeat, then everything changed. Armed with a unique neural weapon, the merciless alien warriors turned fleet crew against their own. Entire warships went rogue. Suspicion and fear ran riot.

Victory now required new tactics and a new kind of ship and crew.

Lucas Sterling is an Omega captain. He is the commander of the fleet Marauder Invictus - an elite, black-ops warship that operates outside the rules of combat. Together with his crew of Omega officers - each chosen in a depraved and monstrous trial of grit and determination - Sterling will stop at nothing to beat the brutal Sa’Nerra. Even if that means killing fleet crew that have been “turned”. Even if that means killing the people he loves.

They say space is cold, but the heart of an Omega captain is colder still…

A brilliant series with a somewhat shaky start

Disclaimer: I was provided a copy of this book. free of charge in exchange for an honest review.

I like sci-fi but, being the low-brow fella I am, I prefer stories with lots of of action, space battles and explosions rather than deep world-building politics. As such, this book was a pleasant surprise as, while not brainless, it has action and excitement in spaces.

I'm unsure of the years that passed between the writing of the 3 books in this compilation, but I assume several passed as the difference in writing from book 1, through 2 and into 3 is startling. Book one feels like a self-published pulp novel with unrealistic, shallow caricatures of heroes and non-nonsensical scenes. That said, the story was great and the threat of the Sa'Nerra felt very real with high stakes and the hijacking of humans was a brilliant idea I'd not seen as an invasion method before.

Book 2, while still suffering from stereotypes (such an almost entirely female main crew..), the characters are much deeper and some (such as the excellent standout character Griffin) are really well written and memorable.
Again, action has really improved and it was great to see both excellent space battles, but also a fantastically powerful female characters.

By book 3 is where Ogden has really hit his stride, with both amazing action but also a real sense of humanity to the crew (both for the human members and others), with a real sense of mental suffering and PTSD with the crew facing a hunt into the unknown depths of The Void.

Throughout all books, regardless of the quality of the writing, Steve Barnes' work is top notch with each character narrated with personality and emotion. He really succeeds in added gravitas to moments of danger and humour to the rare, but all the more essential light-hearted moments.

An excellent read and I'm pumped for books 4 onwards.

Loved it

I didn't like the narrator to begin with but once I got to book two I found I like his narration. Stick with him, his narration will grow on you.
Loved the book. It is fast paced with a lot of action and great characters. I loved it because of the characters. Lucas Sterling the main character is not what you expect. He is different and I didn't like him to begin with but he grew on me.
There is a romance but it is a slow burn. I am glad the author did it this way otherwise I wouldn't have believed it if it happened to quickly.

On the fence

This one although well written didn't seem to grab my attention the way I expected despite interesting characters, not sure if this was due to the narration which although good didn't match the voices I thought went with the story, or just because life meant that this took a lot longer that my usual speed.
The 3 audios helped a lot in regards to carrying on with the story where perhaps I might have given up after the first one, the usual space war story follows the lines you would expect although the change of allegiances kept a nice change of pace.
The political situation is kept to a nice side note but still drives a lot of the background keeping a realistic scenario ongoing and this was something I enjoyed as the hidden depths of the series was always something in the background.
Overall I enjoyed this depsite the increased time to properly get into it, still on the fence as to grab the next 3 or perhaps see what it's like in book form before jumping back in again.
i requested this audio and have decided to leave my thoughts for everyone.

Great story, but :

Author Gareth J. Ogden created a beautiful Universe only that us science-fiction readers pay attention to every word and sounds, Mistakes like Captain Lucas Sterling not understanding how he didn’t notice that his Lieutenant is the daughter of a really famous Captain even after she tells him that she never got alone with her father hence she used her mother’s maidan name, also once getting pushed into the back of the seat when there are no seats on the ship deck ( which also makes no sense )and the unlimited commandos on such a small ship like they got a clone factory down at the bay area.
Also i would love to know what so special about the Invictus ( a small ship without any surprises like special weapons or being able to go invisible ) Nothing !
Now the part of the review which I’m having problems finding the words but I’ll try:
Great story which missing emotions or something that I don’t have the right words to explain, something which i can’t understand but for sure something is not there.

Oded Ostfeld.
