Oluf var den tredje af Svend Estridsens sønner, som også blev konge.Hans lidet flatterende tilnavn skyldes, at han regerede i en tid med en hungersnød så slem, at han, ifølge Saxo, selv måtte undvære sin julemad. Da Oluf dør i 1095 tager Erik Ejegod over. Han får helgenkåret Knud den Hellige, gør Danmark til et selvstændigt ærkebispedømme og skaffer nordboere fri bar i Italien.
