Summary

Six more episodes of Andy Hamilton’s fiendishly funny and award-winning BBC Radio 4 comedy. James Grout, Jimmy Mulville, Robert Duncan and Andy Hamilton star in six episodes from the third and fourth series of 'Old Harry’s Game', the comedy series set in Hell. Satan may rule the roost, but he’s beset by the poor unfortunates condemned to sit out Eternity with him. Amongst them is the Professor, who is convinced that societies evolve and mature until Satan introduces him to Bill Clinton. There’s also Scumspawn, who here finds he trying to deal with a lager lout, and a new arrival in the form of a Health and Safety Officer - who soon announces that the lighting in Hell is inadequate. As for Satan himself, in this batch of episodes he is concerned about his image on Earth, persuaded to remake 'Casablanca' (with Bogart, Bergman and a mutant alien), and determined to prove that the English are the worst nation on Earth.

He also takes offence to W.B. Yeats’ verse description of him - and so pays a visit to the underworld’s own Poets’ Corner.

Series Three Episode One – 24th March 1999.

Series Three Episode Two – 31st March 1999.

Series Three Episode Three – 7th April 1999.

Series Four Episode Two – 5th April 2001.

Series Four Episode Three – 12th April 2001.

Series Four Episode Four – 19th April 2001.

A fiery furnace of brilliant one-liners and biting satire, 'Old Harry’s Game' is the insider’s guide to Hell.

Old Harry's Game

Absolutely brilliant! First listened to a couple of episodes on the the car radio, on my way home from work. Just my kind of humour! My only wish is that there were more of these available.

Selected stories from an hilarious version of hell

Would you consider the audio edition of Old Harry's Game to be better than the print version?

I am not aware that there is a print version to compare as it was originally a series of half hour radio plays broadcast by the BBC. With music, sound effects, distinct actors and voices for the various parts I would imagine it to be superior to a radio script printed version and very well suited to audible media.

What did you like best about this story?

The difficulties and dilemna presented to Satan by the professor's insistence on finding goodness in man generally. The profound thoughts are much better cloaked in humour and irony than my analysis written here.

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Yes I have heard the two previous series and urge that they are taken in the correct order. The performances are on a par with the previous excellence and these episodes are good in developing the concept and interplay of the characters with some novel twists.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Hellishly funny

Any additional comments?

Please get and listen to the series one and two before this one. I have given only four stars for story as unlike the previous this is selected episodes from series three and four and not the complete series of either. Nuances and plot development is not as smooth or comprehensible as in the complete series, although the episodes selected are good ones and deserve the title highlights.

disappointing

There are 6 episodes in the collection, 3 of those episodes are also on the only other collection of this series that I have bought from Audible. Sorry BBC this is not good.

The fun Continues

What made the experience of listening to Old Harry's Game the most enjoyable?

Yes, depends on your humour but this is good old clean funny. I highly recommend getting a few seasons and if you like the first few episodes .. if you like them get all the series as with the exception of season 7 they are all excellent, season 7 good just not quite the same and a little more repetition .
