Dorothy Graham is dead, which is inconvenient, not least for her. Luckily, she has planned for this eventuality. Now, if any of the truly dreadful people she is related to want to get their hands on her money, they’re going to have to do so via a fiendish difficult and frankly bizarre competition of Dorothy’s devising. A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Tinker's Cottage nestles in a forgotten corner of deepest Somerset. It also happens to sit on a weak point in the space time continuum...which is somewhat unfortunate for Ian Faulkener, a graphic novelist from London, who was hoping for some peace and quiet in which to recuperate following a very messy breakdown. It was the cats that first alerted Ian to the fact that something was not quite right with Tinker's Cottage...the cats and, of course, the Pope, disappearing literary agents, mislaid handymen and the insanity of Cherie Blair World.

Summary
When gangland detective and former cop Eoin Miller wakes up to realize his almost-one-night stand has gone cold as a corpse in his bed, his gypsy heritage screams for him to do the easy thing and run. Having abandoned his morals, ambitions, and relationships for a life of alcohol, denial, and dirty work for local crime bosses, escape seems to be the only option left. But Eoin is surprised by a compulsion to root out his unknown enemies and fight for survival.
All too soon, he finds himself caught in the crossfire between nearly every faction in town: rival crime lords, drug dealers, politicians, cops - even his estranged wife has a card in play. His quest to uncover the truth - and prove his innocence - resurfaces deep pains, old scars, and shattered relationships that threaten to bury him under regret. That is, if the killer doesn’t bury him first.

Old Gold. By Jay Stringer. 1st book in series.
Where does Old Gold rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
As this book Old Gold by Jay Stringer is the first Audio book I have listened to (my trial month with Kindle Unlimited) I think it was excellent. A good narration with a variable choice of speed. A very good thriller detective story which kept me guessing until it was revealed who the killer was, right near the end of the book. Now I want the second book, titled, Runaway Town.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I enjoyed all the characters as they all seemed plausible.
Which scene did you most enjoy?
Not telling as it might be a spoiler.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
It was all so good I can't choose one.
Any additional comments?
A very satisfying read or listening. I must get the rest of this series.

Oddball protagonist!
Old Gold is the first novel in what is now the three book Eoin Miller series set in the midlands of England. As a young man he went against his Gypsy heritage and joined the police. He quit the police to work for a drug gang. Eoin's estranged wife is now in the running for police commissioner while Eoin has sank into alcohol addiction. When a woman he picked up at a bar is killed in his bed while he is passed out, he sets out to solve this murder mystery.
Eoin is weak, cowardly and stupid to go with his alcoholism. He is, however, much less bad than any of the other characters in the novel. Overall Old Gold is an interesting and worthwhile suspense thriller with excellent narration. I will likely listen to the next novel in the Eoin Miller series.

Once I can focus on the book I can't stop, untill any of the befor mentioned items kick in to the story again. Great story with a big bouncy pair of Bullocks!
