Summary

The unabridged, downloadable audiobook edition of Dawn Frenchs’ second brilliant novel, Oh Dear Silvia, featuring a full cast of readers including Gareth Armstrong, Jane Collingwood, Beattie Edmondson, James Fleet, Llewella Gideon, Jack Lowden, James McArdle, Pauline McLynn, Patrice Naiambana, Celine Rosa Tan, Maggie Steed, Ruby Turner, and Dawn herself.

Who is in Coma Suite Number 5? A matchless lover? A supreme egotist? A selfless martyr? A bad mother? A cherished sister? A selfish wife? All of these. For this is Silvia Shute, who has always done exactly what she wants. Until now, when her life suddenly, shockingly stops. Her past holds a terrible secret, and now that she is unconscious in a hospital bed, her constant stream of visitors are set to uncover the mystery of her broken life. Meanwhile she must lie there, victim of the beloveds, the borings, the babblings and the plain bonkers. Like it or not, the truth is about to pay Silvia a visit. Again, and again and again...

A superb story filling you with mixed emotions.

The story had me wanting to keep listening. Superbly written. Dealing with a difficult subject in a sensitive yet thrilling way. The actors had me believing every character as if knowing them. Twists and turns. Who knew a patient in their death bed could be so intreguing. Superb!!

Brilliant, moving story

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This story is very sad in parts but overall a family centered tale cleverly told - the twist was unexpected and great!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Oh Dear Silvia?

SPOILER ALERT - the death scene - well done.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Crazy Jo and her animal antics

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

alas not

Hilarious and Sad

Very well written and thought provoking, I liked how it was narrated and the character development was excellent. Only Dawn French could write something so desperately sad and hilarious at the same time.

Made me laugh made me cry!

What did you like most about Oh Dear Silvia?

A stonker of a listen. It caught me right from the start and I resented having to put it down to get back to work.

What other book might you compare Oh Dear Silvia to, and why?

None. Such a refreshing style of writing.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I feel sorry for anyone who simply buys the book. If ever there was a reason to use Audible it is to listen to such a wonderful moving book. With a fabulous cast who had me in tears with laughter one minute and sniffling into a tissue with sadness the next. The choice of narrators was spectacular. I could never hear the accents in my head the way they sound when spoken.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I would have loved to listen to it all in one sitting but time would not allow.

Any additional comments?

Please do another very VERY soon please.

Funny, sad, silly and easy on the ear - great

An interesting concept well executed, with a cast of characters that are at times serious and silly. The main narration is by Dawn French with actors taking on the voices of the various characters, all of which are well rounded and believable, mostly anyway. A very touching book in places and very funny in others this is well worth a listen. The cast do a great job of bringing the book to life, and despite a final epilogue that gets a bit too dream sequence for my tastes overall a really good listen and a good, entertaining book. Recommend.

Brilliant!!

Dawn French has done it again!! This book managed to make me both laugh and cry!! The characters are well written and believable bringing out various aspects of human nature, from the complexities of marriage, through sibling rivalry to the relationship between parent and child. The way that she manages to tell the same story but from various characters point of view keeps it interesting and fresh. The narration is excellent and really adds another dimension to this brilliant book.
