Summary

Raised in a war-ravaged continent, temptation comes to Calla Caldwell in the form of a charming and mysterious stranger. Giving in to his intimate seduction, her world is forever changed by a single bite.

Calla quickly learns the handsome stranger is vampire Prince Trystan Vladu. His bite was an attempt to claim and save her from a plot of vengeance generations in the making. However, the claws of that ancient vendetta are scraping ever closer.

Thrust into a new nightmare by the prince of the corrupt kingdom of Morbeth, Calla is captured, tortured, and starved in the dank confines of his dungeon. While in captivity, she takes part in a séance with a witch of light where she contacts a departed relative - a princess of Incendia - who bequeaths a gift to Calla that will tip the scales of good and evil...if she can learn to harness it.

With a dark tapestry of secrets, lies, and murder unraveling around her, Calla must learn to embrace the power roiling through her veins or be snuffed out by the strangling fist of a malevolent darkness.

Already looking forward to the next book.

Okay, so I’ve read and listened to many fantasy books. This one has everything I like, magic, mystery and a kick ass cast. It was so nice to see the character development, and to see the story unfold! I can already tell that this series is going to be an epic one! This book seemed like it’s laid a really good foundation! The narrator did a wonderful job! Can’t wait to see what she does with the next book!

A disappointment.

This was such a disappointment. What started out as a promising premise for a great story turned into an annoying adventure of a Mary Sue, who flirts with every single guy she comes across and nauseatingly flirts with them all. They all happen to be super good-looking and want to help her. After five seconds of knowing them, she decides she trusts them and spills her guts about everything. There's no tension because there's always a convenient way out of everything, she just happens to pass out nearly every chapter for days at a time toward the end. Calla "Mary Sue" Caldwell repeatedly calls herself nauseous, meaning “causing nausea” instead of saying she is nauseated. And I would have to agree. Her attempts at flirting with every male she crosses while constantly insisting she didn't feel comfortable about people she didn't know certainly made me nauseated. There were other cases of several other words used incorrectly as well.
The only saving grace for this book was that the narrator has significantly improved from her earlier work, though there were times I cringed at the cheesiness of it all. It was hard to tell if it was the terrible writing or the narration, or some unfortunate combination of both.

Vampire fantasy with magic

So glad I picked this up. Fans of Sarah J Maas will enjoy it. Narrator did a great job with characters voices. The story is well developed with many interesting characters. Can't wait for book 2.

A great story! I hope the next book is on audio soon! I didn't want to stop listening before the end.
