About this listen

A prophecy of keys has been set in motion, and darkness will rule again if the game is not played.

For one thousand years, a peace law has ruled over the realm of Raymara with an iron fist. When a storyteller unleashes five deadly beasts from the magic of his dreams, the once-harmless land is thrown into chaos.

Five unlikely companions embark on a harrowing quest to find the beasts and return them to the pages from which they were created. Little do they know, they've been given a task much greater than they've bargained for.

Of Liars and Thieves is an epic tale of discovery, friendship, love, and betrayal. Perfect for fans of Hafsah Faizal and Patrick Rothfuss.

First of all, I really really like the narrator. He reads at a great pace with lots of character voices and clear love of this kind of literature.
The writing leaves intrigue and suspense trails and tells a fab story in an enchanted place. Whilst there’s a few quirks to the authors style, such as repeating some descriptive words closely together, this doesn’t take away from the story she has crafted. Overall, I really liked it.

Narrator fantastic, story intriguing

This is a an engaging high fantasy story of a band of misfits sent on a somewhat mysterious mission.

The story is engaging and well-paced, and the world is vividly described, without descriptive passages becoming long or turgid. The author employs some common fantasy motifs, but presents them in an accessible way that feels up to date, with enough humour and levity to welcome those who may not already be immersed in the genre. As someone who is not a regular fantasy reader, there were perhaps a handful of instances in the first half of the book where I felt that aspects of the world were a touch over explained - although these were generally few and may not bother another listener. The novel was at its best for me when it maintained an air of mystery, and there was certainly enough of this to keep me wanting to discover more. I listened to a review copy, but it was an enjoyable experience and at the end I did feel that I wanted to stay in the world and continue with the characters’ stories.

The audiobook is convincingly narrated in a way that adds to the story. The narrator has a mellifluous voice and was able to use accents and tone confidently to add further colour and personality to the characters.

For parents: there are some sexual references, which are generally mild (especially by current standards) and a few instances of bad language, though not strong.

Accessible and modern fantasy

A story in the vibe of Lord of the Rings with a little humour and great characters that you can picture clearly in your mind’s eye.
The narrator is easy on the ear, reading at a good pace and clear as a bell. Didn’t need to rewind to re-listen at all.
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this :-)

Great story and narration

The world building in this story was very well done and kept you wanting to know more about the world and the lore from this universe. This was only enhanced by a well paced and clear narration. The characters took a while to warm to, but they developed well and were wonderfully voice acted. The overall story was interesting, connecting the lore of the world to the main plot lines and kept you intrigued enough to keep coming back for more.

I listen to a lot of audio books and sometimes I won't carry on a series if I don't like the narrator. With this book however it is the opposite and I will be looking out for other books read by Toby J Smith as he did such a great job bringing this book to life. I looked forward to listening to the rest of the series.

A great world brought to life but great narration.

I am not generally a huge fan of the fantasy genre. I read (or occasionally listen to) fiction of all sorts. What I like is a good story, well told! On the whole this is what I found in Of Liars & Thieves. I felt the character development was interesting, the characters were likeable/ believable within the story. I liked the way the writer created worlds and the story without getting too bogged down with endless description. I was interested to return to the story & find out what happened next. There were a few small passages where I thought the outcome was a little predictable but on the whole I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will definitely look out for the next instalment in The Raymara Chronicles.
This narrator added greatly to this story. He has a brilliant voice, his pace and intonation were fantastic. The distinctive voices of each of the characters really keep my interest. I generally read rather than listen to books as I often feel that narration lets the story down. The opposite was definitely the case here!
If you are a fan of fantasy (or even if you are not particularly) I really recommend you give this a listen.

A great story beautifully told!
