About this listen

O Jerusalem! is the epic drama of 1948, when Arabs and Jews fought for control of the city of Jerusalem. This story traverses centuries and continents, covering the time between WWII and the creation of the independent state of Israel. Based on five years of intensive research and thousands of interviews, this is a story of courage, terrorism, heroism, and ultimately, war.©1972 Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre (P)2003 New Millennium Audio, All Rights Reserved Israel & Palestine Judaism Middle East World

Critic reviews

"A history that not only clarifies the military and political events of the war but brings its human dimensions vividly to life." ( The National Observer)
"A story as dramatic, as miraculous, as full of wonder as any ever told." ( New York Times Book Review)

This is an good listen, it really shows the conflict between two opposing ideologies, and the inability of both sides to see the others point of view

What did you like most about O Jerusalem?

Listened as research before visiting Israel. 23 hours is a huge investment but it was much easier to find the time to listen than to read, and I am so glad I did as it helped me understand much as I explored there.
It brought history to life with personal stories and most importantly I felt it was the most objective research I did. I think objectivity is hard to achieve in this part of the world.

Would you ever listen to anything by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre again?

If there was a follow up that followed the history of Israel OBJECTIVELY I would be very interested indeed. I was very sad it finished when it did.

Have you listened to any of Theodore Bikel’s other performances? How does this one compare?

Really enjoyed the narration.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No way!! Just too long.

Best History book ever, NOT a novel

loads of really interesting anecdotes and facts are woven into this history. It is lengthy but never gets tiring.
