Story
Shay grew up on a tough Manchester council estate where drugs and gangs were rife. A life of crime would have been an easy path to take. So it went against everything that was expected of him when he joined the police. It wouldn't be long before Shay's prodigious talent caught the attention of the top. Then came the call that changed his life: an offer to join the secret level one undercover unit known as Omega. And it was easy to see why they wanted him; he wouldn't have to stray too far from what he already knew.

A jaw-dropping account of life as a prison officer in one of the country's most notorious jails. Neil ‘Sam’ Samworth spent 11 years working as a prison officer in HMP Manchester, aka Strangeways. A tough Yorkshireman with a soft heart, Sam had to deal with it all - gangsters and gangbangers, terrorists and psychopaths, addicts and the mentally ill. Men who should not be locked up and men who should never be let out. Strangeways is a shocking and at times darkly funny account of life in a high-security prison.

In this follow-up to Billy's first international best seller, an autobiography set largely in Thailand's infamous prison system, Billy sets out to explore his experience of childhood abuse that would lead to a life of drug addiction and near-constant incarceration. After Billy's sentence in Klong Prem prison was commuted as a result of his extraordinary success as a Muay Thai boxer, he returned to the UK. In this vividly told story, Liverpudlian Billy contrasts his first-hand experience of one of the cruellest prison systems in the world with his experience of UK prisons.

fantastic book
- By anthony birks on 20-07-21
Summary
Some would call this an autobiography. Others would say it’s a hell of a story. I call it my life. Living it had become the norm, but choosing to write about it wasn’t easy. It’s one thing to react to whatever life throws at you, and another to reflect on it. I’ve been sentenced to life imprisonment and confined to a prison within a prison, for a crime I did not commit. Being outspoken and relentless in fighting for justice had become my only choice, and as it turns out, my redemption. My personal life, on the other hand, I have chosen to keep private. Until now.
For the first time ever, this audiobook will walk you through my improbable personal journey with brutal honesty. The good, the bad and the ugly. My story, combined with an exceptional journey to the forefront of investigative journalism remains unparalleled. As the host of the critically-acclaimed Netflix series Inside the World’s Toughest Prisons, I continue to do what no-one else has ever done before.
I am Raphael Rowe and my career was born as a result of spending 12 years in prison for crimes I did not commit.
All this has inspired me to try to make positive changes in prison systems throughout the world. I believe passionately that we can make such changes, and this is why I have set up the Raphael Rowe Foundation.

Inspirational
I've watched all of Raphaels Netflix series but that doesn't even scratch the surface of this man's bravery and resilience. lesser men would have buckled mentally and physically under the years of pressure he was under.
This audible book narrated by Raphael himself offers a small glimpse into his life and opens your eyes to not just his troubles but ours and the worlds as well inside and out of prison.
If you were going in to battle you'd like him by your side, if you wanted a really interesting dinner guest you'd want him by your side.
Expertly written and told with conviction it's a story of injustice not many could comprehend but sadly many do.
I'm lucky enough to have signed copy of this book at home but it means so much more to hear him read it.
As the heading states....Inspirational!

Amazing audible.
A most intriguing and unbelievable story about injustice and racism in our modern society and justice system. I couldn’t stop listening! Raphael’s story is incredible and who better to tell that than the man himself, which he does so calmly, humbly and without bitterness or spite. I was intrigued to find out about, not ‘just’ his prison time of 12 years, but his background before going inside and his family life and career following on from that with the BBC, Panama and Netflix. Raphael truly is an inspiring individual and I look forward to hearing about more great things he will achieve, opening up our eyes to the justice and prison systems all around the world.

An amazing listen
If you want to hear a book about strength and struggle this is an excellent one. I listened to it, read by Raphael himself. From being jailed for a crime he didn’t commit to being a journalist and then onwards and upwards. Superb stuff!
Much like Tez Ilias’s book, it brings about tales or institutional racism that I’ve never experienced aimed at me, but is so gutting to hear about. It’s a book that makes you wonder what happened to justice and truth, and want to fight for it. It’s also a book with a great big silver lining. Though Raphael’s struggles are now day to day ones, not fighting for freedom, many are less fortunate. As well as laughs and funny sections, it’s thought provoking and inspirational.
A great listen. Cheers Raphael!

Amazing & fascinating!
10 stars!Rafael's personal story is beyond description! It's horrific, fascinating, frustrating & full of historical stories of survival in some of the worst prisons in the worlds worst prisons, yet Rafael never loses hope & he encourages the men he meets to continue to improve their own lives & prepare for life "outside" the walls. I cannot wait for more of Rafael's insight & patient understanding as he experiences each prison he visits, & gets each inmate to reveal His crime, personality & his wishes & dreams. Rowe is my new favorite aUthor! His voice is clear & clearly pronounced, & I can't imagine a "professional" reader doing a better job ! Huzzah!
