Summary

New York Times and USA Today best-selling author Lorhainne Eckhart brings you the first book in a new crossover series!

The social worker and the cop, an unlikely couple drawn together on a small, secluded Pacific Northwest island where nothing is as it seems. Protecting the innocent comes at a cost, and what seems to be a sleepy, quiet town is anything but.

Billy-Jo McCabe never expected to become a social worker, considering the broken system nearly destroyed her. Shortly after she takes a job on a remote Pacific Northwest island, she gets a call about an adolescent girl who’s gone missing from a wilderness camp, and questions arise about the marks and bruises seen on the young girl’s body before she disappeared. Roche Harbor detective Mark Friessen is called in to investigate the disappearance, but instead of working with the newly appointed social worker, he ends up butting heads and clashing with her every step of the way. Billy-Jo becomes the rival he does his best to avoid, considering the only conversations they have involve her pointing out his shortcomings and arrogance, telling him exactly where he can go. But when Billy-Jo finds herself in over her head, she’s forced to team up with the man she tells herself is her polar opposite, someone she could never be attracted to, as he has the uncanny ability to bring out the worst in her. The only thing Billy-Jo wants is to find the missing girl and see that she gets the kind of help she herself never got before being tossed in the system - before her father, Chase McCabe, saved her.

So, swallowing her pride, she unwillingly forms a truce with Mark, and together, they come up against close-mouthed locals, island secrets that hit too close to home, and the realization that their case about finding and helping a young girl has turned into something far more sinister.

Good story.

I really enjoyed this story and the narration was OK. It’s the beginning of a new series from this fantastic author but it has ties to her other series (some of which I haven’t read) because one of the MCs is Mark Friessen. Two very strong personalities butt heads but have to team up to find the missing girl.

I’m on to the next book in this series!

A complimentary copy of this audiobook was provided to me at my request and my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author and/or narrator.

Great Read

Nothing As It Seems (Billy Jo McCabe Mystery #1) was a great read by Lorhainne Eckhart. Billy-Jo never thought she would become a social worker especially since the broken system almost destroyed her. She takes a job on a remote Pacific Northwest island and gets a call about a young girl who went missing from a wilderness camp. Mark Friessen is a Roche Harbor detective who was called to investigate the disappearance. They both end up butting heads and clashing at every turn. But they have to them up in order to find out what happened to the missing girl. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.

A great start to a new series

Billy Jo McCabe is a foster system survivor turned social worker and is new in town. Before she even steps onto the island, she gets a message that there’s a missing girl.
She’s willing to fight the system, especially when it involves a vulnerable child. That’s just what she seems to fight when she meets the town’s detective, Mark Friessen.
But he’s not what he seems. And neither is what’s going on in the sleepy little town.

Detective Mark Friessen is not a fool. When he keeps getting shut down by his superiors, he digs deeper. He’s never dealt with the foster system, having grown up in a loving, intact home.
But he suspects Billy Jo McCabe is intimately familiar with it.
Can they learn to work together and solve the mystery of what is really going on in their seemingly peaceful town?

This is a great suspenseful story and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series.

Enjoyable Read, Disappointing Ending

I really enjoyed this book and thought the narration by Leo Jones was excellent. It’s the first book I’ve read by this author and I enjoyed her writing style. The chemistry between the two main characters was spot on - two headstrong people who have to learn how to work together to solve a mystery. However, I did have to drop a star for the simple fact that the story ends on a cliffhanger, which I wasn’t expecting.

Really Intriguing

This would have been given a full star rating had it been longer. That's the only issue I have with the entire book. It was a really amazing read and I'm glad that I had the opportunity to read it. The longer thing is a personal preference in all honesty. I'm sure there are many readers that absolutely loved the length of the book. There are some heavier topics addressed that I felt could have been leaned on a little more as well. I still recommend it.

Billy Jo and Mark!

Billy Jo has experienced firsthand the problems with the foster care system which is why she became a social worker. When Shay, a foster child at a camp, goes missing she is determined to see that she is found even is it means ensuring that the Detective assigned to the case does his job.

Mark is a Detective who would rather tackle the case without the interference of Billy Jo but with every detail they learn they realize the case is a lot more complex than they expected.

Two forceful characters who find out they make better partners than adversaries as they fight for what is right. The narrator did a great job at bringing out the personalities of the characters and the emotions they were feeling. 🎧 Audiobook Obsession

Billy Jo!

What an interesting character Billy Jo is. Come to the island for an undisclosed reason, she is the new social worker and is ready to work. She takes her job very seriously. When a teen goes missing from camp, she stops at nothing to find her. Mark Friesson is on the island too. Trying to rebuild his life and reputation as a detective, this job was one of his only alternatives. When the missing girl case comes to him, he isn't sure what to think. Known as a runner, he isn't too concerned. But Billy Jo won't let it go. These two knock heads constantly, but there is a definite buzz of attraction just slow burning. Will these two find the missing girl? What will happen to the two of their jobs as they continue their unapproved mission? And will they continue to just tolerate each other? Eckhart has a wonderful start to this series. We are getting to know Billy Jo and Mark along with the crazy island community. Things are not always what they seem, and these two are just beginning to touch the surface of this new town. I can't wait to hear more and see where it all goes.

Leo Jones is our storyteller, and he is fantastic. He is spot on with inflections and easily transitions through his voices. i love how he builds the suspense and keeps us on the edge. Looking forward to more from him.
