Summary

Ansel Packer is scheduled to die in twelve hours. But this is not his story.

Ansel doesn't want to die; he wants to be celebrated, understood. Yet now he awaits the same fate he forced on those girls, years ago.

This is the story of the women who survive.

As the clock ticks down, three women—a mother, a sister, a detective—reckon with the choices that culminate in tragedy, the impact on those in its wake, and the possibility of redemption.

As grim as the title suggests but beautifully told

Brilliant performed by the two readers and a wonderfully constructed and written story. Will definitely read more from the author and look for more read by the actors.

Brilliant!

Told via different view points the story follows the last few days in the life of a serial killer. The story tellers are all related in one way or another with the killer being the common denominator. The story moves along at a fair pace. It was BOGOF. Well narrated and not my usual listen.

Enjoyed it!

Narration was great. The story is interesting and found myself wanting to keep listening to see where the story took me. Enjoyed that the majority of the book is centered around the women. Def recommend!

Thought provoking

A very levelled approach to a heartbreaking subject. I thought it was excellent. Having worked in the prison system for sometime ( although in the UK) I was so interested in the attitude of the prisoner.
Beautifully narrated..
spoiler… I couldn’t understand the mother’s reluctance

fast passed not to many dull moments, clever use of characters.

writing was a bit to flamboyant for my liking. also mentioned how many black men are in the u.s prison system numerous times, yet the Villian is a white man. suggests abit of a middle class "right on" attitude.

Captivating

Poetic but just perfectly so. Life in small snippets and something happening in every bit. Highly recommend.

Amazing

I have discovered a new favourite writer. Will not be surprised to see a list of prize wins from this delicately considered work. Beautiful prose, characters, narrative. The 2 narrators do a great job here. I did not want it to end and will probably listen again to this original take on the story around a serial killer. There isn't a cluche in sight. Loved loved loved this!

Brilliant - a satisfying and original story

Absolutely loved this. Could have been depressing - but instead I felt a sense of hope and peace after reading it. a contentious theme - capital punishment - but it didn't preach opinions. it was full of perfectly formed characters. So much thought has clearly gone in to crafting this great story.
