Sigmund Freud (1856 - 1939) hielt die fünf Vorlesungen im September 1905 anlässlich der 20-jährigen Gründungsfeier der Clark University in Worcester Mass, Massachusetts, USA.
Als Begründer der Psychoanalyse wurde Freud weltweit bekannt. Er gilt zudem als einer der einflussreichsten Denker des 20. Jahrhunderts. Bis heute nimmt Freuds Lehre Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der psychotherapeutischen Behandlung und der psychosomatischen Auffassung von Krankheitsbildern. Der Mittelpunkt seiner psychotherapeutischen Arbeit bildete die Behandlung der Patienten anhand der "freien Assoziationstechnik".
