Summary
Society is broken. We can design our way to a better one.
In our interconnected world, self-interest and social interest are rapidly becoming indistinguishable. If current negative trajectories remain, including growing climate destabilization, biodiversity loss, and economic inequality, an impending future of ecological collapse and societal destabilization will make "personal success" virtually meaningless. Yet our broken social system incentivizes behavior that will only make our problems worse. If true human rights progress is to be achieved today, it is time we dig deeper - rethinking the very foundation of our social system.
In this engaging, important work, Peter Joseph, founder of the world's largest grassroots social movement - the Zeitgeist Movement - draws from economics, history, philosophy, and modern public-health research to present a bold case for rethinking activism in the 21st century.
Arguing against the long-standing narrative of universal scarcity and other pervasive myths that defend the current state of affairs, The New Human Rights Movement illuminates the structural causes of poverty, social oppression, and the ongoing degradation of public health, and it ultimately presents the case for an updated economic approach. Joseph explores the potential of this grand shift and how we can design our way to a world where the human family has become truly sustainable.
The New Human Rights Movement reveals the critical importance of a unified activism working to overcome the inherent injustice of our system. This book warns against what is in store if we continue to ignore the flaws of our socioeconomic approach, while also revealing the bright and expansive future possible if we succeed. Will you join the movement?

The best and most important book I have ever read.
Worth several readings and listenings. I am treating it like a textbook, following references to deepen my understanding. I recommend forgiving the crudeness of calculations on renewable energy sources, and focus on the depth of the argument.
The most comprehensive and lucid work I have come across to date.

Captivating Common Sense Read
A thought provoking and inspiring start point, analysing the inherent and predictable flaws of our current systems, while providing an overview and basic framework for the drastic change that we need as a species. This is the beginning of the conversation and a valuable tool for those lacking a focus for their for their activist energies.

Peter has got a good brain
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
The way Peter presents his logic is brilliant. It really makes sense to me. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to understand our current societal and economic woes. There is not really much else I can say, Peter says it much better, so have a listen.

Hard going, but stick with it
At first I didn’t like this book because it was too heavy on use of technical terms, which made it almost on fathomable for me. But after the shaky start, it started to become more listenable to.
Ultimately this book is about the divide between the rich and the poor, how people are dying as a result and what we do to resolve it. There is nothing to contentious in what is presented, and that you have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo.
Whilst it is a heavy lesson, it is a valuable one and helps to put in perspective what is going on in the world. I recommend it.

One of the few Intellects of his time worth backin
For many years I have followed Joseph's work... he has always been an impressive intellectual that cuts to the heart of the issues we face as an increasing population with diminishing resources.
His arguements are straight forward, intuitive and scientifically verifiable, and importantly tries to move away from the classic dichotomy of Capitalism v Communism whilst continually maintaining a reasoned and convincing critique of capitalism.
To be clear...Joseph IS NOT A COMMUNIST/MARXIST just akin to the child pointing at the naked emperor that is in this case capitalism.
Perhaps this isn't an analogy that works, since though carefully critique obvious and ignored flaws of capitalism, Joseph also proposes solutions...that funnily enough, aren't communism.
This is where Joseph stands above many critics of capitalism, by proposing alternatives very much based on a desire to create a world that puts sustainability and human well being at the heart of the economic/social model he proposes.
For me the most underrated intelliect of his time, and one of the few worth listening to.
