Editor reviews

Judge Sam L. Amirante and Danny Broderick’s John Wayne Gacy: Defending a Monster is an unforgettable work, a rare chilling glance behind the scenes of a universally well-known story, that of notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy, Jr.

Amirante and Broderick, Gacy’s public defender, have constructed a gripping work that not only reveals for the first time new facts about one of America’s most infamous killers, but grapples with great questions of humanity, including the question of what it means to deserve defense - even if your crimes are as great as Gacy’s. Actor Robin Bloodworth’s performance is emotionally powerful and well-paced, and he excels especially at emphasizing those new elements of Gacy’s story which make this audiobook a must-listen.

Summary

For the first time Gacy’s lawyer and confidant tells his chilling tale of how he defended an American serial killer.

“Sam, could you do me a favor?”

Thus begins a story that has now become part of America's true-crime hall of fame. It is a gory, grotesque tale befitting a Stephen King novel. It is also a David and Goliath saga - the story of a young lawyer fresh from the public defender's office whose first client in private practice turns out to be the worst serial killer in our nation's history. This is a gripping true crime narrative that reenacts the gruesome killings and the famous trial that shocked a nation.

Good but….

The author took too much for granted. We’re not all privy to the law to the extent that a judge or a lawyer would be. His words sometimes irritated me with that fact. JWG was a sorry person. But I felt the young lives of all those men meant much more. He didn’t deserve that level of defence or compassion. I felt like the author was more focused on it being his first case as a lawyer in his own right than the men murdered. Just my opinion.

A portrait of an Evil man beautifully told

Engaging and beautifully narrated. How do you defend such a person as John Wayne Gacy? Sam Amirante and Danny Broderick did and it changed them forever. This book teaches us that no matter how heinous the crime EVERYONE is entitled to a free and fair trial. Robin Bloodworth invests a huge amount of energy whilst beautifying and skilfully narrating this book.

ok

interesting perspective, but I couldn't finish it. got bored of the author talking about how much the case affected his life. I don't doubt it but when there was no acknowledgement of the impact on the lives of the victims families it felt inappropriate and self-serving.

Average

First half is amazing
Second half is filled with misogynistic, transphobic ramblings of a man stuck in the 70’s.

Give this narrator an Oscar!

Fantastic performance from the narrator. Great ability to slip from character to character, making it believable.
If it wasn't for this particular person reading the book I do believe I would of quit listening.
The first half was good then the rest was virtue signalling, self serving drivel from the lawyer/author.
Oh aren't we always on the moral high ground?
John G was creepy as he sounds!

How to make murder boring

Too much in the way of self-congratulations (welcome to private practice ad nauseam) and back-slapping. Would have greatly benefited from sharp editing. As to the narrator, just dreadful which didn’t help in the long winded overblown portions. I understand why it was free …
