Summary

Do we work to live or live to work? In today's increasingly competitive and insecure economic environment, we often question the reason for work: Why am I doing this? Why is it so hard? And what can I do about it?

Work may seem just a means to an end: we do it to earn the money to enjoy life outside the workplace. Here, Timothy Keller argues that God's plan is radically more ambitious: he actually created us to work. We are to work together to make the world a better place, to help each other, and so to find purpose for our lives.

Our faith should enhance our work, and our work should develop our faith. With deep insight Timothy Keller draws on essential and relevant biblical wisdom to address our questions about work. There is grace available if we have taken the wrong attitude, idolising money and using our careers to glorify ourselves rather than God.

This book provides the foundations for a work-life balance where we can thrive both personally and professionally. Keller shows how, through excellence, integrity, discipline, creativity and passion in the workplace, we can impact society for good. Developing a better attitude toward work releases us to serve others humbly and to worship God every day and leaves us deeply fulfilled.

A must read

This book is one I wished I'd read before starting my professional career. It perfectly articulates, enforces and encourages the foundation of faith and work. I highly recommend it to be read whenever needed. In fact, at least once or twice a year. Definitely going to be reading it again myself.

Really thought provoking

A great book to challenge accepted norms about work and the meaning and purpose of work.

Good content... with narration blips...

I have a particularly 'immersive' way of reading books... I read a physical book while listening to the audiobook.

in some instances the audio and physical books diverge - and you get a feel of the 'editing' process in the development of the book.

With this audiobook there are differences between the spoken and written text that are simply misreads by the narrator... and while in general these do not impact the text... there are a few places where the meaning of the text is obscured by the miss read.

I like the narrators voice - the performance is good and well paced... but i suspect that there is a lack of editorial review...

So in review - I like this book, it's thought provoking... but read the book along with the audiobook to get the whole picture...

The Christian View and Attitudes of Work

This book is very well narrated with real-life stories to back up the author's view on the religious Christian attitude towards work. Work needs to be done with passion whilst serving the work. Whilst at work our focus should only be that of our job and & the tasks at hand; we should keep our personal lives outside the work place.

In this life we will never achieve the complete perfect picture that we want our work to be, no matter how hard we try and no matter how menial or how responsible a job maybe. It is like someone painting the perfect tree. They spent whatever time they had left to live and only managed to paint one perfect leaf. When this person died they found the perfect tree in the afterlife, the exact same one they wanted to paint during their time on Earth. This story the author refers to as "Leaf by Niggle," by J.R.R Tolkien. Meaning? The little achievements we manage in our jobs are considered extremely precious in God's eyes. God will give us our complete aspiration and desire of hearts of our hard efforts in the Kingdom of Heaven, that otherwise can never be achieved during our earthly lives.
