Colla teoria dei diritti possiamo insorgere e rovesciare gli ostacoli; ma non fondare forte e durevole l'armonia di tutti gli elementi che compongono la Nazione. Colla teoria della felicità, del benessere dato per oggetto primo alla vita, noi formeremo uomini egoisti, adoratori della materia, che porteranno le vecchie passioni nell'ordine nuovo e lo corromperanno pochi mesi dopo. Si tratta dunque di trovare un principio educatore superiore a siffatta teoria che guidi gli uomini al meglio, che insegni loro la costanza nel sacrificio, che li vincoli ai loro fratelli senza farli dipendenti dall'idea d'un solo o dalla forza di tutti.

Ciò che toglie in oggi vita all'Umanità è il difetto d'una fede comune, d'un pensiero adottato da tutti che ricongiunga Terra e Cielo, Universo e Dio. Privo di fede siffatta, l'uomo si è prostrato davanti alla morta materia, e s'è consacrato adoratore dell'idolo Interesse. E i primi sacerdoti di quel culto fatale furono i re, i principi e i tristi Governi dell'oggi. Essi inventarono l'orribile formula: ciascuno per sé: sapevano che con essa, creerebbero l'egoismo: e sapevano che tra l'egoista e lo schiavo non è che un passo”.
