Sur le ton chaleureux et confidentiel qui lui est naturel même en présence de nombreux interlocuteurs, le Dalaï-lama livre le fruit de ses réflexions sur l'homme, l'environnement, sur la société, les institutions, la politique, les religions.
Que propose-t-il ? "Quel est votre secret ?", lui demande-t-on partout où il est invité. "Sagesse, compassion, amour des êtres", répond celui dont le nom signifie "Océan de sagesse".
A travers ces conférences dans les universités et des instituts divers, cette figure lumineuse livre en effet son secret, qui n'est autre que la sagesse immémoriale de Bouddhisme. Mais plus qu'une doctrine dont il connaît toutes les subtilités, ce "simple moine" venu du Tibet veut apprendre aux hommes la pratique de la sagesse et promouvoir la paix par la compassion concrètement vécue.
Il a reçu, en 1989, le prix Nobel de la paix.
